Bluegrass, folk-rock fans, I need a song!
My daughter is getting ready to record her third CD. She is a high school student who plays in a bluegrass, folk band. She plays guitar and fiddle and the band has made quite a name for themselves in our area. (In fact they are making a bit of money)
This is my second request for song suggestions. After her performance in the school's musical last year, she was Bloody Mary in South Pacific, she is being widely encouraged to sing in her band. And I mean widely encouraged. Her voice is very haunting. She is kind of like a Judy Collins, but she needs something faster.

Apologizes to all who answered last time, but those songs just didn't jive her. She needs something fast, but sad. Also need some bass, mandolin, violin in the song. Any suggestions?
Her band's web site is www.abbotthillramblers.com.
Thanks so much to all in advance.

Would fit nicely with what you are looking for. Also check out Tracy Grammer. She is awesome! Check these clips out for some great fiddling and singing:

This is haunting, too:

They're on the Drum Hat Buddha CD with her now deceased partner, Dave Carter. They are folk legends and this whole CD is wonderful.

10. Yup, Nickel Creek...that's what I was gonna suggest too
Great group. All under 30 and highly talented. Check them out. Their new release is pretty decent...

Good luck and best wishes to your daughter, too! You must be proud.

11. Also really wild about Eliza Gilkyson!
Edited on Thu Oct-13-05 06:01 PM by hippywife
Her whole CD Land of Milk and Honey is absolutely luscious! She has two really great anti-Bush songs: Hiway 9 on that CD and Man of God on her brand new one called Paradise Hotel.

Allison Kraus is another option:

http://www.alisonkrauss.com/

And Carrie Newcomer:

But Eliza and Tracy are still my top two picks!

4. Paradise by John Prine
From his eponymous album. In the newer anthology liner notes there's a story of him meeting Bill Monroe, who complimented him by saying he thought it was a tune from the '20s.

It's about the old small town where his parents were raised and the destruction of it by a coal company.
Coal mining isn't a Maine thing, but the destruction of a small town paradise will certainly resonate. It has a very nice fiddle part too.

29. Paradise Kentucky. Completely bought out and the
people relocated by the Peabody Mining Company

I grew up about 30 miles from there.

It really was the world's largest shovel.

8. Gah! Not fast, but I'd love to hear her sing "John Barleycorn"
from Traffic's "John Barleycorn Must Die" album. It's a very subtle, quiet, slow song. I haven't heard enough renditions of it, though. Anything new and different would be awesome.

12. While were at it- Eagles, v 1.0
The first Eagles album has some tunes that are considered "country" by todays standards.

I suggest "Early Bird", but you'll need your own arrangement.
"Peaceful Easy Feelin'" is another that would lend itself to bluegrass.

15. Love those two suggestions. really
love the eagles and john barleycorn.. will let her try them. You know what song she does so great but she won't sing it in public? Box of Rain by the Dead. She does this song better than the dead ever could...sorry to dead fans. Just to give you an idea of how woeful her voice is. She really should do this song because it is just the darn saddest song I have ever heard done by a female.

cut I like is Kansas City Southern. Ooh and Misty Morning. He was a pretty depressed guy. He would have been much more popular if he would have not been scared to fly in planes... due to witnessing a horrible plane crash as a kid. Major talent.

Gene Clark In A Misty Morning written by Gene Clark

D Bm G
I came into town on a Monday morning
Em A D
The tall buildings breaking up the city sky
D Bm G
The streets were wet it had just been pouring
D Bm G D A D
Like the clouds above the storm just had to cry
D Bm G
I trained my eye on a police cruiser
Em A D
I watched and I gulped as he passed me by
D Bm G
I looked around to see the street lights changing
D Bm G
And a voice down deep inside me asked me why
A
Running through my thoughts
G D
Were the memories of the days that I had left behind
A
Way down in my soul were the hope
G D A
That better days were always there to find
D Bm G
The fog rolled in and the lights grew dimmer
Em A D
And the sound of the city streets seemed amplified
D Bm G
In the misty morning when it had just been pouring
D Bm G D A D A D
Like the clouds above the storm just had to cry
D D7 G D G D
Like the clouds above the storm just had to cry

Fox on the Run
Ashes of Love
Rocky Top-one of my fav.
Diesel on My Tail
Long Black Veil-not fast but VERY sad and beautiful
Please don't bury me-fast and funny
Shady Grove

These are just a few of the Bluegrass songs i enjoyed. I know one song that fits the criteria you have but I can't think of the name, I'll call my dad later and let you know.

30. Wildwood Flower has lyrics, actually and is a very
hauntingly beautiful song.

Mother Maybelle/Carter Family version has the lyrics. Snatches that I remember :

"He told me he loved me
and called me his flower
to comfort and cheer him
in life's dreary hours"

.........

"Oh, I long to be with him
regret the dark hour
he's gone and neglected
his fair wildwood flower

excellent songs for the female voice.

Linda Ronstadt, Joan Baez and Tracey Nelson recorded them on the first Earl Scruggs Revue album many years ago (under assumed names, no less).

DAMN I wish that would be re released on CD!!!!!
