Am I the only one who hates this? |

You have reached 707-431-bla bla bla bla. Please leave a message.
Well isn't that something- I reached the number I just fucking dialed!
And I still don't know if it's the person I was trying to reach, because they didn't say who it is.
Sorry. I just had to vent. Twenty years, that's been on my chest. :)

For security reasons, I never give more information than the phone number.
Of course I was stalked for several years by a homocidal freak of an ex boyfriend.

3. I thought for security reasons, you don't give any info: name or # |
|
If they know you, they know your voice and thus your number. If they don't know you, they can leave their name and #.

Well, I guess I'm just weird. I always tell them they've reached Gregg. What are they going to do, reach through the phone and hit me?
Actually, I would love to have a stalker. Beats having no friends at all.

I'm my only enemy. I think it's actually worse this way. But still, that's horrible. I wouldn't leave a message that might identify myself either, if that were the case.
And on another sad note, I've only left relationship while they were still good. It's much more painful that way. But that's another thread.

it was scary, knowing that someone out there wanted me dead. I had terrible judgement when I was in my teens, and picked a doozy of a man to get involved with.

6. I always had a friend record my message |
|
Now with Voice Mail, I just used the standard phone company greeting.
The security purposes being, if he had my phone number, he had my address, and would have shown up uninvited.

I do that, too. Also for security reasons.
That way if a person I want to call me isn't sure of my number, at least they will hopefully recognize my voice. If it's someone who has the wrong number and wouldn't know my voice, at least they can check the number and not leave an important message that will never get delivered.

Mine says, "Oops, missed me. Leave a message."
Now if you call, you'll know it's me.

That took me way too long to figure out. That only works if you're the only person at that number. Otherwise, they might not recognize the voice. The wrong number part has me laughing. I guess we're all very different. Darn it. I was hoping I could defuse my frustration. What seems logical to me, may not be for someone else. There isn't much the human race does that makes sense to me.
It sure is nice to get replies. I appreciate it. We may not all behave the same way, but I know one thing- I love DU.

I used to have a number (apparently) close to a real estate agent's number. Occasionally people would call and leave a message trying to set up a home showing. If they didn't leave a call back number, I couldn't let them know that no one was going to meet them at the little gray bungalow on Cherry street at five. So I started leaving my number in the recording. It seems to have helped.
Yeah, I love DU too.

And I loved the fact that even though some of us disagreed on this thread, it did not have to become personal!
