it's goddamned infuriating. We're not talking rocket science here; it doesn't take more than a little bit of IQ to understand the difference.

There's just NO excuse.

Sorry, this one bothers me a lot when I see it. And I see it too damn frequently.

I'm a Language Mechanics Nazi, but that's professional; I cut a lotta slack on the internets. There're all kinds of people here, and not everybody has LM skills, the same as my lack of advanced math skills. Every brain isn't wired the same way.

It does bug the crap outa me, though. Like fingernails on a chalkboard or something. :hurts:

22. I try to explain that too
I have a hell of a time with spelling and grammar but there are a lot of things that I can do that others can't and I can get frustrated by them. I just know that it isn't about intelligence or even knowledge, it's about natural ability.

I think it is a big thing on the net because it is almost all words.

26. I figure a lot of people just don't pay attention.
I don't treat my posts here the same way I would a term paper. I could spend a lot of time making sure every post is mechanically perfect, but that's just too much work. So, I make sure it's good enough for me to appear reasonably intelligent.

That being said; its and it's is a no-brainer.

30. It's a no-brainer if you have the brain for it
To a lot of people, 3x2y>4xy is a no-brainer. To me, it might as well be Plutonian. Again, everybody's wired differently.

...people put apostrophes before every damn "s" they can get their hands on.

I think because they're free.

It's (ha!) annoying as hell.

16. It's pretty much everywhere. How many houses do we all see with letters
on the mailbox saying "The Anderson's?"

Or stores with signs saying "Fresh local watermelon's?"

Yeesh.

32. here as well
Which is especially scary, as the language spoken over does not use apostrophes, except in very few well-defined circumstances.

Yet plural and genitive both get regularly decorated with a "'s", or even a "'n". :scared:

The phenomenon was dubbed "the idiot's apostrophe", or "Deppenapostroph"

20. No argument here.
I'm all for breaking the rules where most things are concerned, but language is nothing to be made light of. Separates us from the beasts and all that.

And while we're on the subject, it's "a lot", not "alot". $deity, that pisses me off even more than the whole its/it's thing.

21. I have to deal with lots of auctioneers at work
They have, as a rule, the most atrocious language skills I've ever encountered. They routinely send me copy to set with everything capitalized except those words which SHOULD be capitalized. Syntax, grammar...mean nothing to these people. I have little purple fits trying to untangle their words for publishing. I'd love to send them all to adult ed and make them learn proper english.

It's funny: I'm not anal about much, but the importance of clear communication can't be overestimated. It makes me laugh at myself to realize how anal about it I am. (Did I just dangle my participle or something? It feels like I did.)

31. And it's going to be on TV soon.
It was from an ABC show called "A World Away," which will be premiering soon. I work in the closed captioning industry, so I see early episodes of many shows, and the grammar mistake was made by a 17 y/o girl.
