My old elementary school allegedly has 60% poverty rate
In the interst of anonymity, I am not linking the newspaper article where the administrator is quoted as saying this.
The article was about how they were a "School of Promise" which means that the students passed their elementary school Ohio proficiency tests at a rate of 75% or higher while having more than 40% of the students be economically disadvantaged. I am not disputing that my old school would fall into that category and this was obviously confirmed by the state governement.
I have a hard time believing that 60% of the elementary school students live in poverty as the administrator said. Yes, my hometown has lost many good jobs. The unemployment rate has flucuated but is currently around 6% (officially). The elementary district does include a trailor park and a couple of seedy apartment complexes as well as part of downtown. Most of the houses though are two story 1200-1800 square feet older homes with back yards.
