Gangs of New York. Good movie or not?
Edited on Fri Oct-14-05 10:03 AM by Shell Beau
Just saw it for the first time last night. It was okay. I loved how DiCaprio's accent came and went :eyes:. And Cameron Diaz's accent sucked.

1. Loved it
Ok, I skipped a lot of it but I really loved the sequences that featured the work of Othar Turner

2. The ending was a bit anti-climactic
Overall, though, not too bad.

Based on actual events, though loosely so. The real story behind the evolution of the first American gangs is fairly interesting.

3. A really bad movie
Unfortunately I sat through it in the theaters because I have always been very intrigued by the whole five points bowery district of NYC.

What a steaming pile that was!

5. Overall it was "Good".....not "Great"
Cameron can't act worth a damn, that's a given; Leo did fall a little short, like he "ran out of gas" or something.

I liked it primarily because it educated the audience on a time & place that has long since disappeared....but that's me..I love history.

6. I agree. It was good. Certainly not great IMO!
Cameron did suck. She needs to stick to romatic comedies.

7. Yeah, the acting wasn't great, but it relied on a lot of archaeological
work and touched upon the fact that all questions that are being asked now, such as ethnic identity, racism, etc., were asked then. I mean look at the Butcher who hates everyone. It does a good job of really bringing to life the archaeological record of the slums, but the interpretation was a tad over the top, but it was still good.

8. I really thought in the end the butcher would kill DiCaprio's
character like he did his dad's.

9. It would have been parallelism.
And, perhaps not made the overall stuff in the move tacky!

10. I'm not squeamish
Not at all. I watched Saving Private Ryan, and I thought the violence was well done and, I suppose you could say, tasteful under the circumstances.

But after I watched that opening fight in Gangs of New York, even I was shocked. To put it more succinctly, I mean like, woah.

That pretty much encapsulates my feelings on that movie.

11. The movie was pretty good.
I liked it allright. The book was much better. Very interesting read. The book does not resemble the movie one bit. the book was a history of New York gangs, and not a story. It is actually a pretty old book, it was originally published in the late 20's, and cover gang history in NYC from the 1700's till the 1920's.

12. Daniel Day Lewis wuz robbed...
...He should have won best actor for his role...he is frighteningly talented. His performance was the only thing that kept me watching to the end.

14. I don't like films that take huge liberties with history.
I thought it was decent until I saw the documentary (that came with the DVD, no less) about the real Gangs of New York.

16. Yeah, I wish they would stick with the truth. The
truth is far more interesting anyway. But I haven't seen the documentary on the New York gangs. I want to see it now.

15. i was disappointed in the end and Cameron Diaz was awful in it
i will say though they all looked really dirty, like disease riddled dirty. I think that movie confirmed that i just don't like Diaz.
