If you hold the nostril of a small child closed and blow hard into their mouth, any foreign object they may have shoved into the other nare will fly forcefully out.
G'head. Ask me how I know. :D

It's really not nice to laugh at a child who is clearly in distress :o

13. Everytime I tried to call someone (my parents, merh, etc) to tell |
|
them where I was (the ER) and why (small child with hair bead up her nose), I started laughing. Small child was laughing, too - so I'm not a total meanypants.

What will I do when they are grown up and no longer fodder for my amusement?
Here's the really scary part. The child thought that the treatment was hilarious and suddenly the idea of shoving objects up one's nose didn't seem so horrible. She's gonna do it again - I just know it.

|
 That just goes to prove that medicine is not about healing, but about making money! :freak:
So, is this the same junior JJ that gave herself a mullet? :silly:

21. TWICE! She cut her hair TWICE in the same week! |
|
Here's the thing, once you go to the ER, unless you sign yourself or your kid out AMA, you are there for the duration. The nurse told me what they were going to do, but at that point, it was too late for me to give it a try myself. Then, when we were in the room, they made me do it - which makes sense. I don't want some dude with his mouth on my kid. Ick.

28. Well, it is a good thing to know. |
|
When I stuck the plastic in my ear I was so scared -- I hated to tell my parents (I didn't, my tattle tell sister did). I remember the awful suction they used to remove it. I was scared out of my wits and the suction thingy made an horrible noise and hurt. Then I got a lecture from that mean ole doctor. I was only 5 and I DO recall that awful experience.
I also remember being in the hospital when I was 2 1/2 -- so some kids do remember such things.
 Lucky for your little JJjr, you and she giggled and laughed, that means the experience wasn't that bad and if she remembers it when she is an adult, she will smile and be able to remove the bead from your grandbaby's nose without going to the ER. :-)

19. My son was sitting in his room watching TV |
|
and I came in to tell him it was time to go to bed. He got in bed and I hugged him and told him I loved him and started turning off the light and walking out the door. He said to me, "Mom, can you get this bead out of my ear before you go?" "WHAT? Why is there a bead in your ear?" "Well, my ear hurt and I was trying to heal it." It came out with a q-tip and I poured hydrogen poroxide in his ear. All better by the AM. :silly: kids!

22. I don't suppose blowing hard in his other ear would have |

quite the same affect as blowing in ones mouth
I'm glad you were able to get the bead out. It's really a little scary when it happens.

24. Just think, you probably could have plugged his other ear and his mouth |
|
and blown into his nose, and you'd have got the same result that JimmyJazz did -- eustachian tubes and all that.

It's funny, most pediatric gastroenterology and ear nose and throat docs I know have compiled their own photo file of interesting things they have removed from the gullets, trachea, and noses of kids, including beads, the fists of Barbies, etc. etc.
