Jesus. I got into a political flame war on IMDb.
You all know that I'm the least confrontational person on this board. But for someone to attack me while discussing movies was totally unexpected. I rarely go there, let alone post, but I just wanted to see if "Good Night, and Good Luck" was playing anywhere near me, yet. And someone who'd already seen it posted a nice little mini-review, so I commented, having already read another reply, the incoherent ramblings of an obvious Freeper who hates Michael Moore, Al Gore and Howard Dean, in that order. But this guy, who obviously has nothing much better to do, since I didn't even reply to his post, went off on me. My first inclination was to ignore him, but he pissed me off, LOL!:D

What do you think? Was I stupid to reply? I could have been much tougher on him, addressing his hateful sig line, but this isn't FR (where I have taken them on, in the past) and we're supposed to be discussing movies, for God's sake!!!:grr:

You'll know me. And the Freeper calls himself onlookerBARKS.

1. IMDb's message boards are usually filled with idiots...
As is my experience anyway. This guy being no exception.

6. I know. My last post on there was much earlier this year and I should have
learned my lesson. I saw the movie "Sideways," and happened to comment that I was opposed to drunk driving, since there was a lot of it in that movie. Somebody, and I'm not kidding you, took issue with that, saying that there were much worse things. I actually posted that comment, here, as well, and ended up never replying to the chick who advocated driving drunk. I mean, what can you say about that, anyway? I should just stick to DU.

12. I ran into a person just like that on a different board in a different sit
But this dude was a diehard supporter of drunk driving. The argument started when this kid was bragging about how he and his buddies got into a small accident while drunk and how funny they thought it was. Some people are just really dumb.

20. That's what I ran into. This person was way over the top.
Edited on Sat Oct-15-05 03:01 AM by Rhiannon12866
He accused me of being RW, and supporting censorship, and said that we caused more problems than any drunk driver ever did. I posted this on DU, asking for advice, so never replied to this insane post, unlike my replies there, tonight. But you're totally right, some people aren't worth replying to. BTW, some other guy just posted on that thread, calling both of us childish and paranoid. I'm done for the night. Thanks.:hi:

Here's my previous thread regarding IMDb and drunk driving. I've learned my lesson, I promise. No more IMDb, for me. And I didn't even tell you about the dog message board I once joined. I got in huge trouble, in a matter of a few posts, and called my vets for advice, since they know my pets as well as they know their own, I see them so often... My vet said just not to go back there, so I never did.:D

7. Well, you read what I said. And YIKES he just replied to me, again.
I have yet to read it, but I warned him about taking me on. And now DU has got his number, if you read the subsequent posts on this thread. I love DU.:loveya:

And check out what I just said on this thread about the last time I posted on IMDb. It was regarding the movie, "Sideways," and someone on IMDb took issue with my opposition to drunk driving. Remember? I never replied, because of advice I got here, and should have learned my lesson.

This guy is WAY out there. He must be a Coutler fan as just mentioning McCarthy sets him off. What a looser.

22. Yeah it's funny, McCarthy is his "hot button". But he can't actually come
out and explain why McCarthy is good or why criticizing McCarthyism is wrong. Just lashes out with anger. Like a "disciple" of Coulter. :eyes:

10. Thank you so much! And get ready! He just replied to me, again!
I just got an e-mail, but haven't read it, yet. This guy really must bee at loose ends if he's following this thread from three days ago, since I didn't even reply to him. But I thank you, so very much. Was my reply sufficient? I thought so, but I haven't yet read what he just threw back at me. Did he reply to you? Get ready. It's tough countering hate and bluster with truth and logic. I've posted on FR, so I know... Anyway, thank you.

18. Thanks so much! I knew I could depend on DU!
And I just replied to his most recent attack on me, but still didn't really take him on, just replied with the factual errors of his post. But thanks, again. I told him that he didn't want to take me on, and would get his comeuppance, but I didn't realize that it would be from my friends on DU, as well. Thank you!:D

14. Thanks, and I agree. But what I mainly see are the same Freeper talking
points. Michael Moore is lying (has he even seen "F 9/11?") Al Gore won in 2000, whether this guy likes it, or not, and, as for Howard Dean, he was totally derailed by the so-called "liberal media," for one forgettable incident, because they were so very afraid that he might win. But, you're right. I know that you can't argue with closed or insane minds. I've tried it on FR.:-(

9. I think I hit that same thread
or one much like it. I've also gotten into flame wars on other IMDB boards, such as "Tora Tora Tora." Any film with any political ramifications, I guess...

Some people are so touchy!

15. OMG! "Tora, Tora, Tora?" That was the very first film I ever rented for my
Dad, when I first began renting films, back in the '80s, because my Dad was fascinated with WWII. Yikes! Who has issues with that?! These people do carry a grudge, don't they?!
:wow:

But thanks for the support. I guess I'll read his latest. DU gives me courage, which is the only reason I posted this here.:-)

21. They have issues with it
when somebody brings up the whole thing about FDR knowing the Japanese were gonna attack and purposely leading us into war, etc. etc. etc.

Revisionists. :eyes:

Oh... I've seen arguments, too, about the internment of the Nisei. Some people think it was a good idea — probably the same ones who think Gitmo is a resort.

16. Thanks, my friend. I should have been warned.
When I first joined IMDb, ages ago, I posted on an introductory thread. The guy who started it was very friendly and asked if I belonged to any other forums. Of course, I mentioned DU. He never replied, so I should have taken the hint...

17. Remember: "Raving Lunatic" is spelled P-S-Y-C-H-O-T--I-C
That first response, especially, was a little scary. How many of these people do we meer in real life every day and we just don't know it?

19. I just took him to be a Freeper, is all. But that's scary enough.
And, in my experience, most Freepers sound pretty unbalanced, when they attempt to express their opinions, since they have no basis in reality or logic. I guess I was stupid to reply to this nut case, but, as I said, he really pissed me off. He brought his RW political agenda to a movie forum, inappropriate, IMO. But I felt I was safe, since I could just log off, and not return for another year. So you're right. I've been accosted in parking lots for the bumper stickers on my car. They are everywhere. It is pretty scary to contemplate.

27. I certainly noticed that! I got three e-mail notices in about 20 minutes!
Yikes! These folks were really on a roll! I'm long-done with them, won't give such morans the satisfaction. I think it speaks to their desperation when they continue their specious arguments (that guy replied 3x to my one post!) when nobody's either replying nor listening...:eyes:

As for his pride in being a DU lurker, I guess I was an easy target, since I wasn't hard to spot here. But it sure never dawned on me that I'd get into this sort of thing while just discussing movies...:eyes:

However, as I said, I do belong to FR, and recognized their tactics, and their talking points, immediately. Fortunately, I had the sense to remain totally anonymous there.:-)

And thanks, again, for the support. It was most welcome and you sure made some great points!:D

25. Freeper rule #1: Nothing is sacred except your own integrity.
They will attack whatever you say especialy if it involves one of those truths that we liberals often latch on to i.e. McCarthy. His job is to get you to question your beliefs and make you weaker.

Rule #2 You are their enemy.

They'll defend American values for their friends and family, but when it comes to the enemy, anything goes even if he earned a purple heart. Nothing is sacred especially when it comes to the enemy.

In conclusion, Freepers believe they are right. "Integrity, according to Ayn Rand, is commitment in action to one’s own best thinking, to one’s own mind. Integrity is the “practice what you preach” virtue—the principle that you must put into practical action the ideas you hold."

Remember, Freepers follow the ideas of Ayn Rand's "Fountainhead."
