5. Either that or 40-year-old corroded wires are to blame.
Er...even if the drunk is the reason, the "official" story will be corroded wiring.

6. Near my job is an air raid siren they test every Monday at 1pm.
So, a few months ago, on a Monday, this woman is in the store browsing with a cup of coffee in her hands. Well, my watch beeps one o'clock, and right on time the siren goes off. The woman screams, "Jesus FUCKING Christ, what the hell is going on?!?" and drops her coffee on the floor. She looks ready to duck and cover when I explain to her that they're just testing it. She then gives me a nasty look like I'm the one who made her look stupid.

:eyes:

I love working in retail.

23. Phew!
I was about to call the ambulance. It would have been tough, though, since I don't know the number for 911 in the UK.

24. It's 999
although I hear that so many people here think it's 911 (lots of US TV shows and films, you see) that they actually made 911 work too. :)

7. Probably a test of the emergency broadcast system.
Had this been a real emergency, you would have been instructed where to turn for information.

Goes off here every once in a while.

8. Reminds me of when the White Sox won the pennant in 1959....
Mayor Daley I set off the air raid sirens sometime after 10 p.m. that night to celebrate. I was 10 at the time, and this was during the height of the Cold War duck-and-cover era. Jumped on the floor and got into the position I had learned at school. When nothing happened, I went into my parents' bedroom (they were still awake and reading) and suggested we head to the basement. They had actually figured out what was happening and so we went and told my sister, who was ducking and covering in her own bedroom.

when the creeks left their beds...

26. If it's an older siren system
a bird could have flown into it. Otherwise, they are testing out the sirens(something that they are legally supposed to do occasionally).
For info-one long burst is tornado and short, stattaco bursts is air raid (when I dispatched it was my job to test the sirens).

29. Are u anywhere near Pilgrim power plant?
I used to live down that way and the day I heard those sirens being tested-and how close they sounded-was the day our house was put on the market (long ago now). :scared:
Good luck with the winds tomorrow. I've got a "reflecting pool" in my basement at the moment myself-but NO complaints, considering.....

30. Here in MO they use the EBS for "Amber Alert"s nowadays...
drives me fuckin' NUTS! Every time the sirens go off I figure I have to get right with God then the computer voice comes on and says there's an 18 y/o white girl "suspected missing"...

... then I wipe the shit from inside my underwear and go about my business.
