Question For People Who Moved To Another Part Of the Country
Is there a food or store or event that was unique to your home region that you miss desperately?

As a suburban Philadelphian (Delaware County) in Maine, I miss 3 things, Taylor Pork Roll, Tastykakes and Cocco's Pizza! Also, as an Eagles fan, I HAVE to stick with them until they win a Super Bowl. When they do, I'll root for the Pats for the rest of my life. I wasn't popular here before the last Super Bowl!

Is There Something you don't miss?

Don't flame me Philly people, but I never warmed up to the Mummers.

1. I've lived in a few different regions
I miss being close to Mexico when I lived in Sierra Vista, AZ. The greasy taco stand and white sand beaches of Pensacola, FL were always nice after school (my military training was there), I miss tons of things from the DC area, and all the good fresh, natural foods of Japan.

11. I was assigned to an Air Force base there for three years
I was way up north in the not-so-Americanized part of Japan. I found it mostly boring (being a big-city guy), but peaceful and beautiful. The people are so nice there too.

Also, my S.O. has threatened to go live in Tombstone, right up the road from Sierra Vista (the part of our vacation that took us through there last year was extremely bizarre).

I moved from NJ to FL in the late seventies.

I miss:

Krumpets (a TastyKake)
Decent Pizza
Decent Deli items (like real brats)
Crumb buns from the Gaston Avenue Bakery in Somerville, NJ

I also miss lilacs, peonies, apple trees, and autumn color.

6. I miss products from the grocery store back home (Pgh)
Heinz brown mustard, Mrs. Weiss noodles, Lekvar (prune butter)and Mancini's Italian Bread. We've lived in six states over the course of our 30 year marriage. When I go home to Pgh. I stock up and bring these items back with me.

I would bring Wise potato chips too, but they would be crushed into bits by the time I unpacked :-(.

...and we stock up when we go down.

Our potato chips would break, too! Between our teeth!

One advantage we have in living in such a great place is that there are family we see more now that we live 600 miles away than we saw when we were a half hour away! Care packages abound!

and I miss my old grocery store chain in Columbus- Big Bear- which I understand has gone out of business now and really good pizza from the old Italian neighborhood.

I also miss being only a three hour drive from Pittsburgh and going to Louis Tambellini's restaurant there. That is a seriously excellent Italian restaurant!

Giant Eagle (I remember them from my grandmother's area south of Pittsburgh) came in and reopened in many of the old locations. They're much more expensive than Big Bear was.

When I lived in Dublin, I bought a townhouse so it wasn't as expensive as renting. My folks live over in Hilliard.

Wish I could afford to come home for a visit soon.

...in Cincinnati. It's a grocery store that's about twice the size of your typical Target. Their produce section has stuff that I've never even heard of. And their beer and wine section is, well, it is enough to make me weep. Whole sections of ethinic foods. Seafood that is to die for. If you're a cook, the place is like a trip to Disneyland.

21. There are Goya products stocked in central Maine? :-o
I was surprised the last time I was there that the Hannaford's in Disgusta is carrying a lot more ethnic groceries. It used to be when
I gave my sister a recipe for some ethnic dish it would start with the instruction to pick up X ingredients on your next trip to Portland.

As a West Coast transplant, I see the same 'family unity' effect you described. It's amazing how many Mainiacs are willing to trudge all the way out here just to visit me. ;-)

For food, I miss steamers more than anything. After that it's the Maine shrimp in winter and raspberries and low-bush blueberries in summer.

73. Sorry, I didn't mean to insult your home
"Disgusta' has long been the unofficial name of it because it's where the evil government meets to plot rules and regulations on everyone's lives and new ways to tax us. It is more a comment on the capitol than the city. Even my sister who lives there seldom calls it by the official name and she loves the area.

I like the little restaurants on Water St and taking a stroll around the capitol when I'm there.

13. Moved from CO to Western PA
I desperately miss Chipotle (I know, I know, it's owned by McDonalds. But I love their food!) I've been thinking about driving to Ohio one of these days just to get a Chipotle fix.

There was also a set of restaurants where I used to live in CO called Yakitori. They had this wonderful dish called Tatsuta which I have never been able to get anywhere else and I miss it terribly. They also made my favorite bottled Teriyaki sauce which I can't get anywhere else either. And they made this miso soup with little crispy things floating on top...

Ok, I just need to stop now. I am making myself hungry for things I can't have and that's just depressing.

83. McDonald's does not exactly "own" Chipotle
There's a partnership, but Chipotle has stayed true to its principles. All-natural meat, for one thing.

www.fastcompany.com/fast50_04/winners/ells.html

Houston is rich in Tex-Mex, high-class-Mexican & recent-immigrant-Mexican. I don't NEED Chipotle, but it's sometimes convenient & not bad at all.

Sincere sympathy. Hope that Chipotle expands to your area. Anything but Taco Bell!

Visiting ex-Houstonians miss Tex-Mex most of all. And Blue Bell ice cream.

Have you tried QDoba yet? It's almost the same. It would help you cope until you guys get Chipotle. I checked and they are in PA; the map won't come up right when I paste it though.

We have both here in Dallas, and they're very similar.

26. I moved from SW VA to Chicago...
I miss...

Mountains!

Being able to see thousands of stars at night.

The smell of wet woods.

Near-total silence except for night birds and crickets and very distant dogs barking.

The annual Old Time Fiddlers Convention in Galax.

I don't miss...

The two-hour drive to the nearest decent bookstore, record store, or place to hear any live music that *isn't* bluegrass/old-time (which I love) or Christian rock (which I don't).

The social isolation everyone who doesn't belong to a church feels.

The pro-RW signs for miles, esp. in election years.

The ROADS! (Yes, Chicago streets are full of potholes. Wah, cry me a river! At least they aren't made of dirt with a 600-foot drop on one side and no guard rail.)

Copperheads.

29. I truly miss REAL Mexican food since I moved to Vermont.
People "try" to do Mexican here, but folks, I can tell you, ground beef with a red sauce akin to spaghetti sauce, is NOT an enchilada.

I long for a Rubios (or Fins) fish taco. Or a great carne asada burrito, from any number of terrific hole-in-the-wall Mexican food stands in the San Diego area.... Robertos # Whatever...

In my neck of the woods, near Killington, we don't even have a... shudder... Taco Bell.

I order salsa and mole and other stuff through a Mexican grocer website. Yeah, I got desperate this summer.

Oh well.

Marinate white fish ( I use hake or tilapia) in a sauce made of the juice of one lime, 2 T vegetable oil, and taco seasoning (packaged or homemade.) It should have the consistency of bottled salad dressing. Marinate 1 to 3 hours. Make the sauce and cut veggies, cheese and get the other bits ready.

On a ridged skillet or a grill, heat the surface as hot as possible (non-stick is bad here.) lay the fish on the skillet or grill until seared, then flip. Cook carefully.

Break the fish into the tortillas, add lettuce, cheese, tomatoes, salsa and serve.

Sauce: (Stolen from a defunct chain in AZ and CA called Mucho Mas)

1/2 c sour cream
1/2 c buttermilk
2 T. chopped cilantro
1 t. cumin
2 T. finely chopped onion
Mix and drizzle over fish tacos.

32. Down in San Antonio, Texas, (my hometown) we had Luby's.
Which was great for stick-to-your-ribs, clog-your-arteries Southern cuisine. Their chicken-fried steak was out of this world!

Up here in Washington, which is great in every other respect, we only have The Olde Country Buffet. Whose food I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy.

Well, okay, I WOULD. but I wouldn't feel good about it. B-)

This was the early-mid '90s, so there is probably better fare in DC now.

But the lack of lattes in our nation's Capitol back then was shocking for a Berkeley/San Fran girl!

Now I'm back on the West Coast and the food and coffee are wonderful here.

121. in my travels, I have learned to love new things and then miss
them when I moved on:

The number one thing I miss from my childhood that I can't find anymore is Tastee Treet, a little loose meat burger place that was the favorit hangout for everyone. Those little burgers had crack in them too and so did the soft serve ice cream. I have never tasted soft serve like that anywhere else ever. I think they came out of Nebraska or Iowa, the guy that ran the one at home settled there after WWII when he got out of the Army; he had been stationed at Ft Campbell, married a local gal and ended up running a Tastee Treet ...damn I miss that place.

When I lived in Germany for 6 months, I learned to love Schnitzel and European breads, sparkling cider, and interesting cheeses. I need to find a good German restaurant.

When I moved to Boston after living in Kentucky for 20 years, I missed green beans cooked all day with ham, good corn bread with no sugar in it, white beans slow cooked all day with cornbread and green tomato relish, really good pies, and Southern Pork Barbecue. Oh yeah and iced tea available year round and turnip greens.

When I moved to Tennessee from Boston, I missed excellent pizza and chinese food, Jewish delis, especially those wonderful rare roast beef sandwiches on Kaiser rolls, good sub shops ..

Now I am in Texas, and for a long time couldn't get the good barbecue I loved but now we have it available from Red Hot and Blue. Not perfect, not the local pit master, but quite acceptable. Most all the southern things and ingredients to make them are easy enough to find. We even have a good pizza place. If I ever leave Texas I will really miss the Mexican food the most.

AND CENTRAL MARKET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

143. did you get the Soft Serve Ice cream? I hope you did and I
hope it was as good as the Kentucky one was. It was creamier in color than Dairy Queen, etc. and had a much richer taste. My mom always suspected it had Eagle Brand Mild in it.

There are times when I would sell my cats for one of those burgers though. Wish I could figure out what was in them.

I did get my hands on some Phillips Seasoning tho.

Kind of like Old Bay Seasoning, but better.

Not only is it good on crabs, but good on ham steaks, and chicken.
Yummmmm

133. yep--it does
But if you get up to Ventura Blvd, in Van Nuys and Sherman Oaks, there are some decent big delis that a lot of celebs like, too. For the life of me, I can't recall names right now, but they should be google-able.

148. It's a Nowegian version of the tortilla, only made with Potatoes.
My grandmother made it during the holidays. Put some butter on it, maybe some sugar and cinnamon, roll it up and enjoy. I absolutely love it. Here's some links for you.

Seriously, if you're just looking for something different for the holidays, try it out..........if you can find it.

it happens. When I was in California, I missed good pizza. There ain't such a thing as really good pizza there that I found. I tolerated Little Caesar's and Papa John's, but found Pizza Hut, Dominos and Shakey's to be disgusting.

On the other hand, I grew REALLY fond of B.J.'s Pub and Grill and their excellent salads, and El Pollo Loco's great chicken. So it wasn't a total loss.

Now that I'm back east again, I miss BJ's and El Pollo Loco, but have re-introduced myself to great seafood chowder and potato skins at Pub 99, and of course good franchise pizza at Papa Ginos. :) (Not to mention some of the dishes at Bertucci's)

Oh yeah, I forgot: I REALLY miss Souplantation back here. There are none anywhere that I can figure out, and there just isn't an equivalent to them around, either. If someone knows of an equitable exchange, let me know, willya?

NO FREAKING WAFFLE HOUSES

My God! The last one was in Yuma, AZ and I carried that damned cup in my car for years!

It was horrible.

Fortunately, I am back home now in the land of normal foodstuffs.

152. I miss the perfect summers in Colorado...

And the dark-hollowed hills of Kentucky, the ten thousand lakes of Minnesota, and the mountains and glaciers of Alaska. I miss the balmy winters of deep southeast Texas, and the arctic blizzards of Minnesota. The hills of North Georgia and the swamps of the South. I've been fortunate to see some wonderful places in this life so far. I hope I'll see them all again, and more.

Somehow I forgot this was a food thread. I originally was going to post about the incredible DeKalb Farmer's Market outside Atlanta. I used to buy whole fresh salmon there, cut to order for less than $10 a fish. And the cafeteria had the most delicious samosas, original and beef. I lived 20 minutes away, but it was worth the drive.
