1. Uhhh...they had already lost a game, you know. |

I wouldn't call them losers. That was one hell of a game.

If I had to hear Texas #1 AND the Astros winning, I'd beat my car radio with a hammer.

24. On behalf of all Tulanians, Mack Brown bites the big one. |
|
He raised the Green Wave from near-Ivy League status (in football, that isn't a compliment) to the brink of respectability -- and then ankled as soon as a major conference job came up, at North Carolina. The Hullabaloo's weekly picks around 1990 always included the "Mack Brown Special", that is, they'd pick whoever was playing UNC that week :-)
Then he pulled the rug out from under the Tar Heels when the Texas job opened up. What a creep -- and only a backward lunge by Leinart kept him from being on top of the college football world. :puke:

Complaining about the refs when you wanted Notre Dame to lose? The end justifies the means. Or is this the wrong board for that sentiment? :)

14. USC Fumbled the ball and it was not called. |
|
Where the clock was running down the first time? And ND thought they won. If you watch close you see it. But for some reason the refs didn't call it.

15. The fumble was out of bounds. Hence the need to stop the clock. |

The refs actually got that right.
Edit - smart move by Pete Carroll to not have replay. That decision worked in his favor.

Not to get all geeky but the ball went out of bounds before ND got possession of it, which is why USC retained possession.

'SC has just enough great weapons and good fortune to overcome a young shaky defense.
That last call shocked me. A QB sneak had to be less than 50/50 against a stacked defense. It was an all-or-nothing call and you were passing up the safety valve FG attempt in the process. i thought fore sure Leinart would take one quick throw into the end zone, then settle for a FG and probable OT if the pass failed.
Pete Carroll may have been a genus in declining the opportunity for instant replay. I'm not sure Leinart's fumble on the next to last play didn't go out of bounds inside corner of the end zone, which would have been a touchback for Notre Dame. The announcers ignored that, but it must have been what Charlie Weiss was complaining about when he went out onto the field.
On edit: I'm at work and maybe I saw that wrong in the quick glance I had. Someone above said something about going out at the 3. It had to be the same play. Perhaps that's what Weiss was upset about.

21. Blocked FG for a TD on the final play of the first half |
|
Completely changed the game. The Mich St coach was furious. He blamed the coaching staff. He wanted a downed ball to set up the blocking schemes for the FG, but that wasn't communicated properly and the Spartans rushed the FG attempt. Instead of a 20-7 lead if successful, it was essentially a 10 point swing and Ohio St had all the halftime momentum, suddenly down only 17-14.

Seriously, though - that was HARSH. I always support ND (unless we were playing them obviously), and I am still in shock over that ending. WTF?!

23. Robbed? That's over-stating. |
|
Leinart fumbled the ball out of bounds, which stopped the clock. Now, whether the spot was correct is another matter. It was difficult to see from the side angle. But, as far as stopping the clock for the last play, that call was correct.

now if it weren't for those fucking 7 extra fucking seconds... :grr:
it was one hell of a game and like the announcers said during the Penn state-Michigan game, no one deserved to lose.
