Edited on Sat Oct-15-05 07:10 PM by flamingyouth
University of Washington (also has branch campuses in Bothell and Tacoma)
Seattle University
Seattle Pacific University
In Tacoma: Pacific Lutheran University and University of Puget Sound
And various community colleges

What are you looking to rent? A house? An apartment? It varies a lot by neighborhood.

What kind of job are you looking for?

11. There's a lot to do
especially if you like hiking, skiing, and camping.

There are plenty of teams to join (especially softball.) I know we have golf courses around (I live next to one) but I don't know about tennis courts.

Nightlife, on the other hand...

It really needs some all-night coffee places, laundromates, and bookstores.

20. There's good stuff in the U District.
Some good live venues there and in Pioneer Square.

There used to be a thriving Goth scene, too, if you're into that. Not sure if there is anymore.

I LOVE Seattle. If I could live in the US, that's where I would be.

21. Oh, no, I didn't mean zero nightlife, you're right.
It's just different somehow. It's just not as much a part of the culture as it might be in other places.

Lemme try to tell you what I mean: I'm originally from New England, where many people go out a lot. There are signs outside clubs reading "No jeans or t-shirts." Hair & makeup. After-hours clubs.

Here, people wear jeans to the symphony. It's more casual in general and there are fewer places to go out and "be seen" (though lots more these days.) I can't tell you how many people from out of town have commented to me (I tended bar for many years here) about how quiet Seattle gets at night. It's just not very glitzy in general--more like music & microbrews, if you see what I mean.

Sorry, I didn't mean to be confusing. There is definitely a lot to do, but it's not exactly what people seem to expect.

a anti-bush demonstration and not feel like the whole place is ready to decapitate them?

At the big protest on the 24th, there were NO freepers/counterprotesters at all.

Seattle's very liberal!

22. Seattle is pretty liberal.
Once you leave the West Coast, however. . .

Washington is a great place to live. No state income tax. A beautiful environment and a liberal spirit. Unfortunately, there are a lot of yahoos, as well.

23. OK THE BIG QUESTION!!!!!
How much can a person make and what is the cost of living?
Let me put it this way, Can a person earn a living without sacrificing their life!
Here in Joplin, if you want to make money you must either be rich already or have 3 jobs. Most of the time it takes a couple to have 2(full time, one dayjob and one night job) jobs a piece to make ends meat!

Didn't one of those reports just come out this week? I'm not sure whose stats they used, though.

Seattle ain't cheap.

27. Yup. Seattle is pricey
Average median home price in King Co (Seattle area) is ~300K.
And the housing market is hot and has not shown signs of cooling off.

Can't say where the affordable housing is in Seattle anymore. Maybe some other moving-savvy DUer in Seattle can tell you.

Coupled with the fact the area's public transportation is not the best. Primarily bus, some rail (only on weekday rush hours) and light rail (cross the fingers) may be available in a few years.

28. It depends on where you want to live.
You can find a nice apartment in the U District for about $800 (including utilities) or you can find a rat trap in the heart of downtown for $400 or so.

I think you can find something nice in any price range, but you have to do the footwork here. Don't just use the internet or rely on real estate agents. Scope out neighborhoods that you like and then swoop down like a hawk. ;)

The job market is so-so. There are so many talented people here and competition is tough in most jobs, especially in more corporate fields. However, I think it's pretty easy to get a job in retail. There are malls, stores, shops, etc. galore. Always a new soul-crushing complex opening. (I think it's the Tulalip Tribe that just opened a huge outlet complex on the reservation). Costco & Home Depot start at $10 per hour with benefits.

The one bonus of Washington's employment law is that the minimum wage goes up automatically. It rises every January.

Remember it's the LESSER Seattle. We don't want really folks moving out here and helping our traffic situation do we??

We don't tan we rust due to the rain.

Please, go to some nice city like New Orleans

<on edit>

Jobs here are really cyclical. If you work for Boeing it is either boom or bust. In 1971 that company went from approx. 110,000 employees to 35,000 employees. The unemployment rate was over 10% for several years. People were walking away from their homes, you could buy an apartment house by simply agreeing to take over the payments(a great deal if you could find any renters). Remember that after 9/11 Boeing dumped approx. 35,000 employees.

There is still a good deal of dependency on Boeing but it has diversified greatly into Microsoft and other small companies.

As to nightlife check out http://www.thestranger.com/seattle/Home
as I understand it Andy used to work there.

Also LESSER SEATTLE goes back to Emmet Watson who used to write for one of the newspapers in Seattle. His goal was to keep everyone from California from moving to Seattle and impairing the quality of life.

Like I said before New Orleans is a much better place to live (sic).

29. You're right. Seattle is horrible.
It rains so much, Ray Bradbury wrote a story about us. http://www.intermed.it/bradbury/Allsummer.htm

The traffic is horrible. The streets are steep and slippery in the ever-present rain.

There is a Starbucks at every street corner.

People are so casual, yet highly pretentious. :)
