Why is Ashley Smith treated like some kind of hero
I mean she offered the guy the Bible, "Purpose Drive Life" and oh, Crystal Meth.

I hardly think the first two cancel out the third. I'm pretty open about recreational drug use but Crystal Meth is the most addictive and nasty drug out there. It's such a plague on our society that I freaking had to sign a form and show my driver's license just to buy Alka-Seltzer Cold medicine.

I saw that her book debuted at #15 on the NYTimes bestseller's list. Do these people who buy her book know they're probably just supporting her drug habit?

2. Sorry for the stupid question but
who's Ashley Smith?

btw, I agree with your meth comments. That stuff seems worse than cocaine, as people w/out money can make it and access it. In my area, they've put Sudafed Sinus night behind the counter because of it...

Pisses me off, as sometimes that's the only thing that seems to open me up and unclog the ears and nose at night.

3. They put it all behind the counter
BTW Ashley Smith story in a nutshell

Some escaped convict broke into her home and held her hostage. Ashley, a mother & god-fearing christian, read to the criminal from the Bible and "Purpose Driven Life". When the crook asked for some marijuana she instead gave him some of her stash of crank.

Not kidding you

4. OMG!
I take it she is getting a sizable amount of media coverage about this?

If she had read to him from Clinton's book and offered him pot, she would be thrown under a jail... :eyes:

5. Fundies are just digging this chick
She says Jee-bus told her not to use crank anymore.

Personally until she checks herself into rehab, I say she's lying.

12. I am inclined to agree with you...
Interesting how the fundies are 'selective' in their understanding--had she just shared her crank and not the Bible and 'The Purpose Driven Life' I'm sure they would have a very different perspective...

A church we briefly attended was pushing that book, and workshops to go through the book. I'm highly suspicious of those that just buy into it as holy...

7. You gotta be kidding me!
I heard about this so called Christian crap but I didn't snow she gave a murderer crystal meth! Couldn't giving him a dangerous narcotic stimulant be considered aiding and abiding a criminal?

And now I do: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashley_Smith

Ashley (Copeland) Smith was a hostage held by Brian Nichols in an apartment complex located in Duluth, Georgia, over the night of March 11-12, 2005. Nichols had forced his way into her apartment, tied her down, and masked her mouth with tape. In an unexpected move, after more than 10 hours of being held hostage, Nichols allowed her to leave her complex upon her claim to visit her daughter. Smith took the opportunity to dial local authorities who summoned the Gwinnett County, Georgia, S.W.A.T. team, who eventually arrested him upon an uneventful surrender.

During her ordeal, Smith read to Nichols from the Bible and from Rick Warren's The Purpose Driven Life (sales of which shot up in the weeks following the ordeal, after its role in the hostage ordeal was revealed). She also cooked him pancakes and gave him crystal methamphetamine, an illegal stimulant, from her personal supply, although she maintains that she did not use the drug along with him.<1>

14. I am so with you on this...
I can't stand that whiney girl acting like she actually did something worthy of this praise. I love how she got the reward money, too...when the guy broke into HER house. :eyes:

I can't stand these people who do absolutely nothing heroic and become instant millionaires because of it.

15. And I am guessing that she didn't actually WRITE the book
A ghostwriter probably did extensive interviews and wrote the book for her.

16. Hardly any of these tell-alls are written by those that get the credit.
It's one of my top pet peeves, actually.

17. Me too
Really, what needs to happen, is the actual writer should get the credit, as in "The <insert name> Story, as told to <insert actual author's name>"

18. Dude, she shared her meth.
Plus she didn't get killed. Christ, we'd have Nancy Grace snivelling on TV for weeks if that happened. Ashley spared us that inconvience.
