so i watched 'haute tension' last night
has anyone else seen it yet?

what did you think?

i was with some friends & we were under the influence of some things... so we had fun watching it

plot holes you could drive the mystery truck through... but very bad/sick/enjoyable entertainment all in all...

and if you do get it, make sure you watch the french version with subtitles... the dubbed version is ridiculous... we switched over after 5 minutes

5. Dubbed versions of anything but old kung-fu flicks are ridiculous
You should know that.

7. but i hate how the default play goes straight to the dubbed version
they should have had set up on the main menu... you have to navigate through hell to find it... or at least it seemed that way last night

check it out... it's seriously sick... great cinematography... absolute shit, but entertaining as hell

9. If we're playing at French film titles...
I watched la Haine - what a damn fine thing that is. :bounce: for me finally getting round to buying the D.V.D.

11. La Haine is brilliant
I picked up the 10th Anniversary DVD a couple of months ago & it's still just as powerful as I remembered it.

I've seen a couple of pretty decent arty French films recently, so I'll title-drop!

Dans ma peau (aka In My Skin) about a young woman becomming increasingly obsessed with her body, after she cuts her leg badly.

Anatomy of Hell about a man and a woman exploring issues of sexuality after he rescues her from a suicide attempt in a gay club. It's unconfortable in places & has some very shocking scenes, which at first repelled me but after a second viewing (the film is just over an hour long) I was intrigued by what Breillat was trying to say.

And the two Gasper Noe films I mentioned below, Irreversible and Seul Contre Tous (aka I Stand Alone) which are incredibly powerful. Incidentally, the lead in Irreversible is played by Vincent Cassel from La Haine

15. How about "C'est Arrivé Près de Chez Vous" aka "Man Bites Dog"?
One of the best black comedies I've ever seen.

16. Very, very good film
I really want to get the Criterion DVD, but I need a multi-region player.

Although very different in many ways, another film which offers a strong critique of screen/media violence is Funny Games by Michael Haneke. I went in almost totally blind - which I think is the best way, but spoilers big & small abound.

(& whilst thinking about it, Lukas Moodysson's latest A Hole in My Heart has pornography & reality TV as targets for satirical critique.)

10. Worst. Twist. Ever.
Other than that I thought it was great. Without giving anything away, the scene in the house was particularly well done with some great moments of suspense. The guys behind it are set to remake Craven's The Hills Have Eyes which has the potential to be one of the better 70s/80s remakes coming up.

Also, have you seen Gasper Noe's Seul contre tous (aka I Stand Alone)? Phillipe Lahon (the psycho in Haute Tension) plays the lead - "The Butcher" - who is quite possibly the most bitter person ever. It's a stunning performance and a film well worth checking out - as is Noe's most recent piece Irreversible) - but not if you're seeking something feel good!

13. i know
there were so many plot holes it was pathetic...

the only way i can describe it is the most entertaining really bad movie i have seen in a long time... i would say it was great if it wasn't for the aspects that are so crappy... everything is counterbalanced

i do think it managed a level of expansion in the horror/slasher genre, however... due to the twist & primary thematic elements... because of that, as a whole, i would tilt it to the 'good' side of the movie pendulum
