my real favorite is the very similar Fireside (grow mainly in Minnesota--so I'm not sure how widely available those are.

43. Mmmm....some fresh Fireside apples from the Pine Tree Orchard
in White Bear Lake.

And, while I'm there, a piece of their apple pie with homemade cinnamon ice cream.

9. Orins
The ones from Japan, not the BC Orins.

The Japanese ones have the most exquisite taste, and are incredibly fragrant. I don't see them very often...only every two years, for a short period of time...they are truly a treat.

The BC Orins are milder in both flavour and fragrance.

Of the ones listed, Galas would be my favourite.

Haralson. They make the BEST caramel apples; the tart/sweet combo is divine.

40. I used to get Cortlands
because I have two Revolutionary war ancestors buried in Cortland County, NY but Cortlands are just too darn big. So I switched to macs. Now I am not living in apple country anymore. Apple pies were too much work anyway, all that peeling. Rhubarb is much easier - chop, chop, chop. Cortlands would probably work better for pies - less surface area to peel.

18. It's really hard to beat a good....
... fresh, crisp Macintosh! All kinds of subtle flavors, perfect texture, not too sweet, just tart enough!

A good Granny Smith plays a close second, although it is sometimes hard to find good ones...

37. Braeburn's from New Zealand
are the best. The Washington state ones aren't consistent. If you can buy one from New Zealand you are in heaven. I usually only buy US produce but not when it comes to my Braeburns.

35. Favorite Eating Apple? Honeycrisp!
Trust me. I'm from Washington State!

I weep for the quality of apples found in grocery stores, including my own state. It's my opinion that, more than any other fruit, apples seem to deteriorate the most in transit. Find a local roadside stand and get some fresh picked.
