One-hit Wonders!
I'm watching a show on VH1 right now showing "one-hit wonders," and they've shown the groups that did "Pass The Dutchie," (remember that stupid song?) "Pop Muzik" by M, "Hot Hot Hot" by Buster Poindexter, and right now they are showing Suzi Quatro.

5. The Little Black Egg by The Nightcrawlers
Interesting how one song about finding a black egg in a tree and becoming the envy of the neighborhood became a hit in the mid-60's. Hey, everyone was high then.

15. Ah, you laugh... but
"In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida," in addition to likely being the most-often-misspelled album/song title of all time, sold 8 million copies in its first year of release (1968) and 30 million to date. It was in the Top 10 for a year and a half and the Top 100 for nearly three years. For its time, it was monstrously huge.

42. Even though I was 14....
... I smelled the cheese.

Music taste is 100% subjective and I understand that there is no objective criteria by which a song can be judged.

But there is a reason that this song is the poster child for "psychedelic" histrionics of the level of a 10 minute drum solo.

49. Way more than a drum solo
That bass hook will stay in your head a long time, and I don't think anybody had heard "elephant guitar" before that. Me, I really loved the keyboard.

Plus, it was one of the first times acid rock got mass airplay.

But you're right about subjectivity. Only reason "Frampton Comes Alive" was such a monster hit is not many people had heard a talkbox before it, even though they were around years earlier. And there's nothing musically redeeming about a talkbox solo.

Maybe in the States - but they are still alive and kicking in Europe . They had a great album in 2000 .

34. I know, but US chart hits are the ones VH-1 audiences are most familiar
with. The show is aimed at a US audience. A show aimed at a European audience would be quite different.

Hated the top song w/ a passion when it was first out.
One good thing they did do on the show was explain that one hit wonders aren't necessarily cute, catchy songs and that many famous artists have had only one hit. I argue that point w/ people all the time but no one seems to get it.

Sad part is that I liked quite a few of these songs when they were popular(yes, I am a child of the 80's).

But it served its purpose at the time. I worked in a mental institution at the time and it kept our patients entertained for hours.
I'd rather have them dance than fight.

btw-used to love the number 2 song.

21. Why is it sad that you liked a popular song when it was popular?
That's how those records got to be hits. Radio played them and millions of people bought them.

22. Some of it is looking back and thinking that I like some crappy
songs. I was the kid at school who had to listen to something that no one else in my small town listened to.
I do have to admit that recently I've begun to appreciate some of the songs of the 80's all over again. Many are starting to relisten to them and realize that not all 80's music was bad.
