Anyone have a link for football rules
All the rules. Every last one that any idiot can think of.
My daughter has expressed interest in playing football(not this year-she's not old enough). They have a league that she will be old enough for next year. I plan to enroll her.
The problem? As a girl they will only allow her to play powder puff and nothing else. They also will not pick a woman as a coach-ever. This is irritating.
My plan? We are working on passing, catching and overall getting dirty and trampled on right now. I also plan on memorizing every single rule that I can get my hands on between now and next summer(when they start picking the coaches). I plan on proving that not only can a little girl play football just as well as the little boys but that a woman can also coach a team just as well as a man. If there's a rule, I want to know it.
I know the basics (like most of the "daddy coaches") but I have to go the extra mile to impress just for the chance. Please help if you can!

1. the rules of your league may differ
Edited on Mon Oct-17-05 08:22 PM by northzax
find them. there are no standard rules of football, like in baseball or basketball, since it happens so differently at different levels. here's the google link for powder puff rules. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=powder+puff+football+rules&btnG=Google+Search

just remember, no one is expecting the Statue of Liberty. No one ever expects the Statue of Liberty it's the oldest trick play in football (the earliest citation I can find is 1916, and even that refers to it as at least 25 years old at the time.)

2. Thank you.
I know the rules of powder puff are similar to flag football. I played powder puff many years ago. My problem is that at the age of 6 (in my area) they are already separating the girls and the boys and making them learn how to play differently. I don't want her thinking that she has to be different from the boys-especially at such an early age. At such an early age the sports should still be coed.
As to the coaching-I know a few women who would put those same men making this silly rules to shame w/ their knowledge and their gameplay of football, yet they don't want them coaching. I plan to give it a good fight if she's still interested next summer.

3. What state are you in, and how old is your daughter?

Title IX might apply to her. It was enacted in 1972 to promote gender equity in sports.

I am not sure if because they offer a flag program, they don't have to allow girls to play tackle or what, but this link might help.

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/stories/2002-06-19-title-ix-cover.htm

I played tackle football in Germany and here. There are now women's tackle leagues in many cities across the US.

Growing up near DC, football is ingrained in my personality. I would say the best way to learn the rules is by watching it. You can read the rules, but without seeing them in action, it will be hard to apply them to the game. Watch ESPN when they break down games, talk about different plays, and penalties. If you have the NFL network, watch that. College rules only differ slightly from the NFL, I would suggest watching both.

There are some great books on football. Remember, though, knowing the rules in itself doesn't make a player or coach. If you contact the league she is going to play in, I would ask for a rule book, or where you can get one. The main rules will come through watching the game.

Here are some links, and you might get the book "How to play football the NFL way".

And here is a Washington Post video series on their local Women's team, the DC Divas.

4. I'm in MO.
I don't know if it would apply since it is club football and not affiliated w/ a school district. I thought Title IX applied more to school districts than anything else.

On edit: understand that pro rules are often different, for instance in college FB, receiver only has to get one foot inbounds for a catch, two feet in NFL...

9. Thank you.
I knew about that (the one versus two feet). I just want to memorize as much as I can so that when they start asking questions I can answer in a prompt manner.
I know the basics of football and I know how to play flag/powder puff. I could coach it. I just don't want them to find a reason why I cannot as they have w/ other women.

6. Well, just a warning...
Football's a lot more than just a compendium of rules. Unlike other games, football is a LOT more complicated. I'm not saying AT ALL that you can't or won't get it, but only that you'll need to do more homework than that.

8. I know.
I can play somewhat. I was raised on football and I can play it just fine. But I want the rules because, from what I've heard, the last woman who wanted to coach was interviewed and asked some of the hardest questions about various rules. And her father was a high school coach!
I just want to do all of my homework before I attempt it.
