2. The Flintstones were kinda mild in their cigarette promotion |
|
Shows like I Love Lucy worked the cigarette plugs right into the program. Ricky would ask for a cigarette and Lucy would go off on this big spiel about how great Philip Morris cigarettes were. The Flintstones at least kept it at the end, so it could be edited off when it became illegal to sell cigarettes on the air.
I've seen some images from old game shows where they'd put the sponsor's name right on the wall. See, when television first started every show had a "principal sponsor"--which is something that came over from radio. And the stars of the show were expected to either use or promote the principal sponsor's product in the story line. Like, if your principal sponsor was Chevrolet, you'd "get in your Chevrolet to go to the A&P." (There was some honesty in advertising there--up in the program header it would call your show "The Joe Blow Show Brought To You By Chevrolet.")
But things change, y'know? People who log onto DU thirty years from now are going to laugh about all the dick-pill ads on television in 2005. "Why would anyone take dick pills? Haven't they always had that operation that fixes your dick when it won't get hard on its own? Man, that operation only costs $25 under National Healthcare, and you walk out of the doctor's office with a raging hard-on."

4. I remember Andy Griffith doing ...Sanka? and Kents. |
|
They all did it. I actually think it was much more honest back then.

6. And we all remember Ronald Reagan's "Chesterfield" ad |
|
Bartcop puts it up on occasion.
The behaviors of those in the past are often shocking to those in the present. Cigarette ads are one example. Another is the ad that recommends douching with Lysol. Yeah, it would work...but...
In ten years, depending on whether the fundies win, the kids of that age will either be shocked that Pat Robertson and Donald Wildmon got away with the shit they did for as long as they did, or they'll be shocked about Ozzy Osbourne and Happy Bunny.

16. Not really, many products come in festive Christmas packaging |
|
When this ad was current, cartons of cigarettes were a common Christmas gift in the US.
My folks used to tell stories about the cocktail parties they attended when they were with the Bureau of Public Roads. The hosts would put out bowls of cigarettes for the guests. You don't see that shit happening anymore.

19. Oh, the smokes themselves! |
|
Yeah, that'd be a bit steep now that we've figured out cigarettes are so addictive people will buy them no matter how high we set the cigarette tax.

8. I own a Reagan Chestefield ad |
|
At the Printer's Row book fair every year there are several people selling old magazine ads (cut up old magazine). I got Reagan selling Chesterfields. I also got Ben Hogan selling smokes.

Picked it up at a flea market several years ago (I collect vintage ads AND Garry Moore memorabilia, so it really fit the bill!).
