one of my favorite areas of the world. get outside of the touristy part of cancun, and it's absolutely divine. we have come thisclose to moving there 4 times in the last 10 years, and probably will buy a house there someday.

about link- in 33 hrs, predicted to be a direct eyewall hit on cancun as a cat 5

2. that is very true.
If I remember from the last time we were thinking of moving, they get hit by a big one about every ten or 15 years. I need to go google...

It's a gorgeous state, I hope they are prepared, because it looks bad :scared:

6. Playacar
That's the resort area next to Playa Del Carmen, where I went on my honeymoon in 1999.

The beach in front of our resort was badly damaged then by a previous hurricane.

Loved the side trips to Tolum and Chichen Itza.

not our resort but in the same area

The resorts can always be rebuilt

9. lol the ruins aren't going anywhere. They're on high ground, and made of
massive stone. They've been there for thousands of years and are pretty durned sturdy.

It's the fishing and diving boats, the palapa huts, the small vendors, the small stores, etc, that will be hardest hit.

The more modern buildings are very tough and built of concrete block and stucco and should be just fine.

Palm trees are great, those suckers can bend all the way down to the ground in those winds, and unless they're diseased or very recently planted, will just snap back up.

I love the Yucatan and have spent a great deal of time there... It's just a wonderful area with incredible people.

12. I will second that, all of that! and add...
I also worry about the dolphins that are in shows, hotels, etc... 'swim with the dolphins'. This can't bode well for them. Xcaret has postponed the MTV Latin America Video Awards, I cannot imagine how their butterfly exhibit will fare after a cat 5. It was built way after Gilbert.

that place is amazing, or at least it was when I went in the late 90's, and it was only halfway finished.

21. Cancun itself sucks. South of Cancun, like 40 miles is where it's LOVELY
and wholesome and charming and rustic and it has jungles and ruins and it's a piece of heaven.

Cancun and the hotel zone SUCK.

Playa del carmen is wonderful off season.

a few years ago! That place is amazing. I had no idea it had been damaged by Emily. :-( I need to check up on it. did you ever visit spiral island? I hope it weathers the storm as well, that thing is unbelievable.

on edit:
OH NO  This makes me very very very very sad. I have been on spiral island, and it was a work of genius. an environmentalist's dream. simply beautiful and Richie was just an amazing host and so friendly. I am so lucky to have had the private tour i did, rode to the island with Richie swimming along, pulling the canoe! I had always planned to go back sometime soon.

Some very Sad news about Richie's Spiral Island.

>snip<
To all Spiral Island fans,

I have some very sad news about Richie Sowa and his once amazingly beautiful Spiral Island.

Hurricance Emily got the better of Richie's once
beautiful Spiral Island and now Richie has to make
plans decide to rebuild his Island wonder or live
somewhere else.

I received an email from Richie last week and it was
sad to learn that hurricane Emily did not spare his
Island.

18. thanks for the link. :-(
I am so sad.

did you read my edit above? Spiral Island was destroyed too.

We came as close as putting in an offer on a business in PA, but new information about the biz forced us to pull it. We were looking into an apartment, and how to bring the dog, etc... details really. We were that close to moving there. We loved it. The people there were unbelievably hospitable.

how did the boats in the marina fare? I hope they are preparing today like never before. this one does not look good, much stronger than Emily, I think.

19. this one will make Emily look like a sprinkle
don't know about the marina but we were really worried about the dolphins and manatee, etc..

have to assume they got all out as i never found any reports of death but those poor people lost everything. our resort is right next door and they still aren't open yet.

this thing could really kill them (again)

20. I noticed on the link you sent (page 2) there was an update on
the dolphins, totally safe. I am not going to sleep well until this thing passes and we can find out how they fare. I am hoping for a sharp turn to the north, and only the western wall will hit them. I doubt it will happen.

This settles it though, that area needs money, we're going as soon as we have a place to stay.

15. Last time I was in Cancun
the hotel workers were urgently trying to get stupid tourists like us to get out of the dangerous surf (there was a small storm coming). I had so much fun in the waves that day. I hate to think of anything bad happening to that beautiful beach.
