7. Do you knnow about the mucus plug? Do you know about the poo???
:bounce:

One of the first things I read about, for some reason, was the mucus plug and it became my running joke the whole pregnancy. I loved asking other partners around the birthing center about the plug and the poo that would come in childbirth. Many knew many did not.

:bounce:

I actually never got to see the mucus plug....the bloody flow took care of that......now THAT is a life changing moment :wow:

when we were pregnant. "So, have you popped your mucus plug yet?"

Pregnancy is good training for parenthood, because a lot of it is about bodily excretions for a long time ...

53. The filet mignon is delectable, but the name of the place is unforgivable.
http://www.lowcarbluxury.com/rest-review-ruthschris.html

How Ruth's Chris Got Its Name...

"Ruth's Chris Steak House" is such a tongue-twister that one restaurant critic suggested it be used as a sobriety test: anyone who could say that name three times certainly couldn't be intoxicated. The year was 1965 when Ruth Fertel (a single mother with two young sons) bought a small eatery in New Orleans known as Chris Steak House. She mortgaged her home and put up $18,000 for the purchase.

The owner (Chris Matulich) gave Ruth the right to keep the name as long as the restaurant stayed in the original location. But after a fire forced her to relocate, she needed a new name because that agreement forbid her from using "Chris Steak House" (which is how everyone knew the joint). She simply tacked on her own name, outraging every naming consultant on the planet. "I've always hated the name," Ruth told Fortune Magazine, "but we've always managed to work around it and we've always made the steak the star." It has proven to be effective as people remember the name because it's so unusual. It has also had an additional benefit... people stopped calling her Chris. (Sadly, Ruth passed away nearly one year ago.)

I like the Susan Blackmore's book The Meme Machine, as well as the Richard Dawkins that inspired it.

I, like others, have just grown to hate seeing threads here with the word "meme" in the subject line.

60. It is. But I work as a writer and editor, so I get to
take it out on the text.

Sub-literate use of English has been considered a "problem" since the first attempt was made to codify the language. The fact is, we're cursed and blessed with the world's most adaptable and malleable language - no other language in history has evolved and changed so quickly. This makes it the perfect global language. It also makes it a nightmare for pedants like me.

61. "Less" v. "fewer" is a huge problem,
particularly on signs at supermarket express check-outs. And among newscasters, of course.

I also dislike "there's" as a contraction for "there are."

I apologize to you in advance for the many crimes I will perpetrate upon the language in future posts.

68. Well, that's a neologism, not an existing word perverted into a new form.
In the UK, "text" has become a verb - "I'll text you", "I'm texting a friend".

It means "sending a text message on a mobile phone". It's a corruption; but it describes a new phenomenon so I'm tempted to let it pass. But it brings out the William Safire in me.
