What stereotypes do you go against? |
|
Gender, racial, orientation, whatever. It's fun seeing how other people are "outside the box".
Me? I'm black and I'm a terrible dancer. I also suck mightily at any kind of sport (if you saw that episode of Everybody Hates Chris where he was dragooned into joining the basketball team, that was EXACTLY what happened to me in junior high, with the same results). I'm a woman and hate chick flicks, I'd rather see a good kung fu movie (especially wu xia films), horror, sci-fi/fantasy, etc. You'll also pry my remote control from my cold dead hands. I love computers, collect action figures (one to stay in the box, one to display) and read comics.

I don't think delaware has a dicernable "sterotype" although it does have an accent, which I don't have.
I'm Jewish but I don't "look Jewish" and I am definatly not JAPy.
that's about it.
My rabbi is tall. So I guess he would go against the "Jews are short" stereotype.

I usually either stop completely to smoke or take a break while walking up a big hill. However, depending on the terrain I have been known to smoke while pedaling. I'd probably drink too but I don't want beer clogging up my CamelBak.

I had a fairly broad Minnesotan accent before I went to college and lived in the UK. When I got home my accent was a fairly "level" typical American.
When most people hear my speak, they have no idea that I'm a lifelong Minnesotan.

131. Yes, when I first moved to the East Coast, people would stare |
|
when I started talking and ask, "Wheah ah you from anyway?"
After nine years, I moved back to Minneapolis, and everyone thought I was from New York.
Then I moved to Oregon, and heaven knows what I picked up there, because in the past two years, I have twice had obvious Minnesota natives mistake me for English. :wtf:
This is in spite of the fact that I spent exactly one week in England when I was seventeen, and that was before most DUers were born.
As I've thought about it, I've come to the conclusion that what they're picking up on are the softer consonants and less-rounded vowels that I acquired during 19 years in the Pacific Northwest. I suppose that if you haven't been around much, that sounds "English."
But I know several genuine English people in my current life here in Minneapolis, and I'm positive that I don't sound like ANY of them.
I've found, however, that my older relatives understand me better when I revert to the stereotypical Minnesota accent. My great-aunt, age 93, will say, "What? What?" until I adopt the emphatic consonants and lengthened vowels of the old Minnesota accent.

I'm Indian, yet I talk with the flattest American accent ever, almost nothing pisses me off more than the phrase "remember your heritage," I listen to punk rock, black metal and Irish music (as opposed to rap as most Indians in American seem to, at least most that I know). I've participated in Renaissance Fairs and like Star Trek, Star Wars and LOTR, but I hate role-playing games with a passion (nothing against people who play them, they just annoy the shit outta me). I literally create more video games than I actually play. I'm a liberal who likes guns and meat and enjoys spending Sundays on the couch, drinking beer and watching football.
On edit: I also don't hate "chick flicks."

My husband and I are almost a complete role reversal.
He cooks. I'm the handyman. The guy can whip up an incredibly gourmet meal while I refinish an antique chess table.
He likes chick flicks (so do I) but I usually prefer action movies.
Now he does work and I stay home with the kids but I'm also a minister. That's a fairly male-dominated profession.
I hear you on the remote!
I'm white and have the lip-bite dumbass dance, but...I can absolutely nail songs like "Stormy Weather" and "Come Rain and Come Shine."
As for being an American, I don't eat hotdogs and I hate watermelon. Fourth of July doesn't generally leave much for me to eat at community picnics. ;)
I drive a mini-van, live in a Republican dominated area, my kids play soccer and I dress conservatively. -- I'm a flaming liberal and eclectic spiritualist.

First off, one that shouldn't be a stereotype, the angry atheist. I am open about my atheism but I try not to be condescending of other people's beliefs. A lot of people think that atheists are cold heartless and a bunch of other negative types. I do love disappointing them by being a compassionate caring person.
Long hair hippie freak. Ok, I have the long hair (even sometimes unkept). I prefer to dress casual. And I am antiestablishment. But I don't do drugs. I like my brain as mucked up as it is. It's the only one I have so I don't want to experiment with it beyond thinking odd things. Not against drugs. They are just not my bag. Which gets confusing when someone assumes that the long hair guy is carrying.
Compute Geek. Yeah, I'm a computer geek. But I fell somewhere inbetween the worlds. For some reason I can talk to normal humans and explain things to them without having their eye's glaze over.
A guy that doesn't need to hang onto the remote. This may have more to do with me trying to get my SO to assert herself more. I give her the surf board and let her decide whats being watched. It could also be that most of whats on tv doesn't really hold my attention so I DU or other stuff while the tube is on.

Travel & Leisure, or one of those travel mags sponsored a study to see where the "nicest" people lived - things like who returned a lost wallet, held doors for people with packages, etc.
Among US cities, guess who ended up at the top of the "nicest" list? The City of Brotherly Love. Our reputation is based so much on our rabid, constantly screwed-and-disappointed sports fans.
So I guess "don't wear a Dallas Jersey at the Linc" is all I'm sayin'....

I golf (public courses, but still...), I play tennis every week at the Raquet Club, I was a member of a blue-blood theater group (they started letting us non-bluebloods in a few years previous), and my girlfriends are all frosted-hair Main Line Matrons who have more money then God.
I also work the polls for the Dems every damned election (including off-years) & go door-to-door leafleting for Dem candidates, I'm pro-Union, make a point to Buy Blue and Buy American (wherever possible), and attend Quaker Meeting and Friends' peace rallies.

I'm a young person, but I LOVE old Jack Lemmon and Walter Mathau movies. I WAS a white kid but I could jump when I was YOUNGER (triple jump scholarship and could dunk). I grew up in North Dakota, but I've never judged a horse, driven a combine, or planted a THING. I'm a licensed attorney but I never took a single political science, business, or government class EVER. (I'm a biology and sociology double major). I'm from the Northern States, near Canada, and I HATE NHL hockey.

I'm male and can match my own clothes. I know that navy blue and black shoes DON'T go together. Don't wear a shirt or tie with stripes with a suit coat with a plaid design.
I love cars but have no interest in working on them. I'm not even a tool person. I don't like math either.
I'm white and from the south but I understand that there is a whole big world out there. I detest repukes too.
I actually can dance better than most white boys but I can't jump or play basketball well. In the 80's, my clubbing years, I could really cut up a rug.
I will think of a few more later.

124. It's a shame I don't fit stereotypes more easily... |
|
...as my mil was at a total loss how to shop for me and how to deal with me in general aside from my ethnicity. All of her initial gifts to me had an 'ethnic' theme. Because of course we all like, fill in the blank....
Dh finally told her to knock it off--but it's sad she had to be told to.
I wonder if she had liked it if I just assumed because she was a senior citizen that she of course MUST LIKE Geritol, Lawrence Welk, and prune juice?
I don't listen to just one kind of music (r&b, hip hop) I like some, but prefer rock, like some metal, I think I have eclectic musical tastes.
I suck at sports. I don't like church. I'm not traditionally Baptist or Christian--though I was raised with those religions--I find pagan faiths, metaphysics and simple spirituality far more appealing, and fulfilling.
I'm a girl, but LOVE video games!!! I'm not offended by porn. I watch Howard Stern. (ducking)...
I'm not crazy about chick flicks--love a good suspense/thriller! As a teen,I had geek like obsessions over my music collection. Love computers and technology. Would love to take some classes on auto repair (think this is important for women). I like things clean--but I'm not at all fond of cleaning--also not a neat freak like some of my girlfriends. When something needs repair in the house, I generally do it, not my dh. doesn't bother me--he has other talents. :P

135. I go against a few stereotypes. |
|
I'm young (25), but I don't care for nice cars, loud noise or girls who dress like they assume you have no imagination.
Musically, I can't stand most of the mainstream stuff that comes out, and the majority of my musical tastes revolve around jazz, classic rock, oldies and music generally made before I was born. In fact, I've been on a Henry Mancini kick recently. As for movies, I'm basically the same way. Right now, I'm trying to finish all the Marx Brothers movies.
I'm of Indian descent (Gandhi, not Sitting Bull), but I'm not a genius and definitely not hardworking. I also hate spicy food and hot temperatures.

-- I'm from Jersey but I don't have the accent. I went to an NJ Catholic school but didn't know a single person whose dad was a mobster. I also hate tomatoes. Jersey prides itself on its tomatoes, but I will have none of them. -- I'm a girl but I love computers and web design, am not terrified of bugs, think rodents are cute, hate chick flicks, never wear mascara, etc. I'm girlier than I used to be, but that's still not saying a lot. -- I'm a college student but I'm not in a sorority, don't drink much, actually go to class, etc.
And I LOVE avocados.

150. I guess I'm pretty weird |
|
First off, I'm a white male from a small town in the South who has never supported or liked Shrub. I'm also not a racist, don't watch NASCAR (or watch any sports regularly, for that matter), and don't hunt (I've never shot a gun, actually.)
I'm from the Bible Belt but have never regularly attended church; I'm an agnostic.
Although I like to think of myself as a hippie-type, and I do have liberal political views, listen to mostly sixties/seventies rock, and have long hair, I don't smoke pot. Despite being a liberal in my beliefs, I'm actually pretty conservative in the way I live.
Oh yeah, also I'm in my early twenties and collect records. I would rather watch a comedy or drama than an action movie (though I do have more tolerance for bad horror movies than I should!) and I would rather read than watch TV. Also, despite being a geek of sorts, I don't know nearly what I should about computers.
I guess that at least scratches the surface of my weirdness!

I must admit I kind of fit the tree-hugging-hippie label, though. (Vegetarian, environmentalist, thru-hiker, renewable energy lovin' chick) But I HATE the Grateful Dead and I don't smoke pot!

152. I need to lose 20 lbs, but am also quite athletic. |
|
You would never guess from looking at me that I walk 3 miles a day and fence on the weekends. I can run up 4 flights of stairs without getting winded. I also put on muscle easier and faster than any other woman I know, and am very strong.
Yes, I'm fat but fit. I just have a weird body type that is both naturally athletic and prone to fat. And it's really hard for me to lose weight, even though I exercise a lot and like to exercise. So people always look at me and think I'm completely out of shape and then are surprised when I kick their ass at fencing or can keep up with them on a walk.

who is libertarian on social issues, everything from legalization of drugs, even though I don't use any, to gay marriage. However, I'm damn near, if not nearly socialist on economic issues, top earners need to have their WEALTH taxed the living shit out of. I hate all sports, barely watch them and coming from St. Louis area, that's unusual. On religion, I'm Wiccan, which is unusual enough for most people, but consider that anywhere from 70 to 80 percent of all Wiccans are female, I'm definately an exception.

I’m a male and I • Don’t like watching sports and have never been actively interested or good at playing sport • Don’t like action/violence movies. I love romance movies/chick flicks and I have watched “Pride and Prejudice” several times and it is one of my favourite mini-series (referring to the BBC version of “Pride and Prejudice”). • I have also read Jane Austen and Emily Bronte and enjoy them both • I like shopping (although not for clothes) • I love the idea of romance and being romantic. You’d never see me reading a Mills & Boon but I do like romantic stories and hearing how people met and so on • I’m a hopeless romantic, idealist and dreamer

I share a few with you:
- male and not interested in playing sports (love to watch, though)
- male and don't like gory movies. Atmospheric horror is better.
- male and I like shopping for certain things (music, books, electronics, holiday shopping)
- male and like to know about people's backgrounds
One of my own:
- male and like just as many or more female singers than male singers (of the more recent singers)

|
- I'm from Orange County, California and I dont surf. In fact, I rarely go to the beach at all.
- I'm white and I would much rather have hot sauce on my food than mayonaise
- I'm liberal but I'm not an environmentalist
- I would much rather watch dancing or art house movies than WWE "wrestling"
