My dog wasn't in the yard this morning, so I started driving around. I saw him in a heap on the side of the road. I thought he was dead. I get over to him and his tail started wagging, but he couldn't stand up. I thought he got hit by a car.
I called our vet and he was out of town, so I called the vet in the next town and he wasn't in, so then I called a vet in the next town.
I had to drive this poor dog that was in shock 45 miles to the vet.
I really thought he was going to die on the way, he was seizing and his tongue was hanging out of his mouth and his eyes were glazed over.
I get to this vet who I didn't even know, and he says this dog was shot!
Then showed me the bullet hole. However, there isn't an exit wound.:(
They gave him some IV medicine for the shock, and told me to call after lunch. However, I think he might be paralyzed, which would mean that the person directly across from where I found him would be the one who shot him. He was lying in a weird position when I found him.
I just can't imagine what would possess someone to shoot a sweet dog?
It was in town on Main Street that this happened.
He was 200 yards from my house.
There will be hell to pay when I find the person who did this.:grr:

is a crime in most areas. You might wish to file a complaint with the police, let them do some investigation. A coward who would shoot a dog might not be afraid of you, but might very well be frightened by a person with a badge and gun.

it won't be hard to figure out where the shot came from.
If the shot dropped the dog in his tracks (which by the position I found him in suggests that), there is only one house that the shot could have come from.
Even though I live in a small town in Texas, it is illegal.
Bad thing too is that I live not far from the school and this happened during a time kids were walking to school so a child could have easily been in the crossfire.

to remove the bullet. Dogs can bounce back from most things. I had one, a few years ago, that was paralyzed after being struck by lightning. She did recover and only had a slight limp.

I had one of my guys get out a hole in the fence Tuesday. I was worried sick and stayed home from work to hunt for him. After a couple of hours, I was walking back up my driveway and he was at the window, barking! Some lady had found him and driven him home and actually put him back in the house! She had left a phone message. I called and thanked her over and over..thank goodness he had his tag with his name, address, and phone number!

I can't even imagine what you are going through. Recently my dog was missing for a few hours and I was a complete and total mess. I was so very lucky that a neighbor picked him up and called their vet about it. I went into a local vet to see if anyone had brought him in and then I was reunited. If he was hurt that would have been a nightmare. If someone had hurt him intentionally I would have done anything humanly possible to punish who did it. It is a crime it should be investigated. It is unthinkable to imagine why someone would do this or how they live with themselves after the fact. So sick. Make them pay.

My dog got loose and was struck by a car, years ago, he was given a 10% chance to survive when he went into surgery. He made a quick recovery and lived a long happy life. Dogs are amazing... they'll surprise you and vets all the time.

There is a chance, of course, that the shooter was passing by, and not necessarily a neighbor. Does your area have a law that it is okay to shoot an animal that comes onto someone else's property? Some places have that law, supposedly to protect ranchers, but cruel people exploit it if a dog relieves himself in their yard.

I know you're heartbroken, but call the police now. It's illegal to shoot an someones pet unless they were afraid for their life.

I went through this with a vile ex-neighbor I had and they were arrested, and then I sued them and won.

But please, please, take this as an opportunity to learn and contain your dog. Roaming the streets of any town or city is not the place for a dog to be, too many things can happen to them. Run over, stolen, shot, all of that and more.

And even if you're in the country, please contain your dog. I live in the country, and first off, there are critters out there who will tear your precious pup to shreds. Also, most dogs when they start running around soon start chasing the livestock, and that is never a good thing. It usually winds up with either you having to foot the bill for a downed cow, or the farmer shooting your dog to protect his livestock.

So please people, don't let you dog outside uncontained and unsupervised. Too many bad things can happen.

My dog is a small pain in the ass, but we love him nonetheless.
He can climb like a cat.
I've built 3 fences and he scales them all--even a 6 ft fence.
Honestly I had quit trying because I couldn't figure out a solution, and he only gets out and takes a run early in the am and then comes right back a couple times a week, so I figured he really wasn't hurting anything.
He was hit by a car about a year ago and learned a respect for cars (of course it took a broken shoulder, a broken leg and a broken foot and toes to teach him).
They didn't expect him to make it then either.:(

A friend of mine had a beagle mix who was a Houdini artist, and would go over, under, around and through fences, it was absolutely amazing. What we finally wound up doing is putting in a wooden privacy fence, so he couldn't climb up the chain links, seven foot high, so he couldn't jump is, surrounded by a base of large rocks, so he couldn't dig under it. Ugly as hell, but it finally kept him in. Of course, being an unfixed male, he was getting out so that he could chase after the females in heat. I hope your pup is fixed though.

Another alternative you might consider is on of those electric fences with the shocking collar. My brother in law uses them on his two dogs, and it keeps them where they're supposed to be pretty darned good. I know, I find the concept of shocking an animal disturbing too, but better shocked and alive than free and dead.

Hang in there, dogs are much tougher than you think, and they can pull through a lot of injuries that would kill people.

it doesn't allow for a full stretch so it prevents climbing, too. They loop under the back and the front legs and look funny but they work. Stopped my Irish setter from climbing trees. Here's hoping that you will need to buy one.

I've done volunteer work with an animal rescue group in the past and it never ceases to amaze me how absolutely cruel people can be to animals. Two of my three dogs came from abusive homes. In fact, Gypsy, my white shepard, still bears scars on her muzzle where she was beaten.

Generally I'm against the death penalty, but in the case of someone who would abuse an animal (or a child) I would have no hesitation at strapping the s.o.b. in and pulling the switch myself.

I hope all works out for your dog ... and I hope the person responsible is caught and punished to the fullest extent of the law (and then has to deal with the karma coming back on him for the rest of his life, too).

I went back to the vet this afternoon.
He said he was going to recommend that I put him down.
However, he said he was doing a little better this afternoon, so we would put off the decision until tomorrow.:(
It is a 90 min round trip...I just got back.
Thanks all for the well wishes and I will be investing in an anti jump harness for him if he pulls through.
I only wish I knew they existed before today.
Has to be cheaper than constructing 3 fences.
Anyway...will keep you updated for tomorrow.

Vet said today that Freckles is doing better.
Said he won't be running any races, but he is getting around.:)

I grew up in a rural area. Town folk would often dump their unwanted doge there. The dogs would pack up and frighten, maim and sometimes injure or kill the ranchers cattle. The ranchers would often shoot and kill the dogs. More than one of them faced criminal charges or civil lawsuit because they killed somebody's high dollar hunting dog or pet.

The dog of one of my best friends from childhood was shot in the head. The dog was in the pasture in back of their house which was owned by her parents when he was shot. Miraculously the dog survived without any serious impairment.

I hope ypour Freckles has the same miraculous recovery. I can't describe how angry I would be had this happened to one of my own dogs.

Spent part of the day preparing a cage for him so he can spend time in the house.
Didn't really expect too much.
He is home now.
He is running around the backyard and acting like nothing ever happened.
Has a couple more days on antibiotics and pain medicine and then he should be fine.
As far as the legal stuff goes, the police said there wasn't any way to know who shot him without a witness.:(
I will be purchasing a harness for him so he can't jump out of the fence anymore though.
Thank you all for your kind thoughts and wishes...I truly can't believe he is okay. I had already told the kids I didn't think he was going to be coming home, so we all had a great surprise today.

Those harnesses do sound like a good idea. I have an escape artist too..he's gotten over the fence 3 times in the 3 months we've had him. I'll be looking at getting one of those too.
