pool with peeing and non-peeing sections?
there have been threads here and there about smoking sections in bars/restraunts. Austins's smoking ban was just upheld (yea!)

The question is, would you swim in a pool that had a section designated NO PEEING and a section designated PEEING. Which one would you swim in?

3. I'd worry that the pee and the chlorine
would react very violently with each other and kill me. :scared:

10. It was one of the anti-smoking groups,
"Truth", I believe. The commercial featured a young lady who opined that non-smoking sections in restaurants made as much sense as no-peeing sections in pools.

11. Well, then ...
I hope the whole pool is a non-peeing section. Most of the non-public pools around here just aren't big enough for both. :hi:

12. Piss is sterile..
... and any organic matter that enters a properly maintained pool is oxidized by the chlorine pretty quickly.

If you think about it, there are things worse than pee in the pool to worry about :)

14. assuming the chlorine is
maintained at acceptable levels. Records from public health departments around the country show that this is unfortunately not the case.

16. That's why I said.
..."properly maintained" :)

It's actually pretty difficult to keep the free chlorine level perfect, since it is affected by so many things, including swimmers - so no doubt it might not be perfect.

25. criptosporidium is my biggest fear in a body of water, and
chlorine doesn't kill it immediately, or sometimes ever.

If I see a kid in a plain diaper in the water, I get out. Fecal matter is WAY worse than any sterile pee. One can drink pee without negative health impact, in a pinch.

Cryptosporidium is a parasite commonly found in lakes and rivers, especially when the water is contaminated with sewage and animal wastes. Cryptosporidium is very resistant to disinfection, and even a well-operated water treatment system cannot ensure that drinking water will be completely free of this parasite.

Data are not adequate to determine how most people become infected. For example, we do not know the importance of drinking water compared to other possible sources of Cryptosporidium, such as exposure to the feces of infected persons or animals, sex involving contact with feces, eating contaminated food, or accidentally swallowing contaminated recreational water.

http://www.epa.gov/safewater/crypto.html

then there's e coli...another fun one! I'd drink a cup of pee any day, chilled rather than fresh please, over getting into a pool or lake that babies/toddlers with non-swim diapers are in.

Are there any diapers a baby can wear that are safe for a pool? It would be good to know since I'll probably have a kid one day.

Little Swimmers are pretty popular. the best thing to do is know your baby well, and if they are anywhere near poop time, get them out of the pool and change them immediately. Fecal matter is bad news in a public pool.

http://www.littleswimmers.com/na/

that said, well operated pools do what they can to offset those that are clueless. A good operator will clear a pool of guests and keep it closed for at least thirty minutes if any fecal matter is discovered (they also will use Universal Precautions when removing said fecal material) They will also have signs posted to warn patrons about the importance of proper hygiene when using the pool.

If adults or children have had gastrointestinal problems or illnesses, and esp. if they have had diarrhea recently, they should not be in a public pool at all. (I think signage in the pool area should say this as well)

17. It might be a good idea to give little kids a multivitamin or at least
a vitamin B tablet when they go to the pool. When (because it's not really "if") they pee, the area around them will turn bright yellow and you can stay away.

As for me, I haven't gone to a public pool in about 20 years. But I remember what it was like. Or maybe that should be because I remember what it was like.
