12. It was a smarter than average horror film...
It's not a movie about startling the audience, which is quite rare, so the one or two jump-moments were that much more effective. It was more of a disturbing moralistic puzzler which I like.

When I saw the teaser trailer with Shawnee Smith ... I couldn't stop thinking about that sequence. It's the best thing in the movie and it never quite hits that crushing brilliance again. It almost does at the end.

Best watched if you know nothing about it. It implies more explicit gore than it actually shows. Great halloween flick. I'm looking forward to the sequel which doesn't look as original but seems like it's out to top the jaw sequence.

45. SPOILERS FOR THE MOVIE "SAW"
A guy wakes up underwater in a bathtub in the dark - his body had been blocking the drain, and as the water goes down, so does a key with it.

When the lights go on, two men discover they are chained to opposite sides of a nasty bathroom by their ankles. There is a dead man on the floor between them. He holds the gun he committed suicide with and a tape recorder, both out of reach of the chained men. One is a doctor, the other a photographer. They have no idea why they are there or who put them there.

They have been left clues. Cigarettes, a key that doesn't unlock either chain...and two hacksaws that are too flimsy to cut through the chains. The doctor tosses his wallet to the photographer so he can see a picture of his wife and daughter ... the photographer is horrified that the picture has been replaced by a picture of the doctor's wife and child bound and gagged but does not reveal this. The picture is signed "Regards, Jigsaw."

The doctor recounts how he was a suspect in an investigation of a serial killer who does not actually kill his victims - people he feels do not "value" their lives enough - rather he puts them in life-or-death jeopardy. The victim can stay put and die or surmount some gruesome task to fight for their life. One is imprisoned in a basement chamber filled with razor wire whose only exit will lock shut after a timer has elapsed. "How much blood will you shed to stay alive?" asks Jigsaw to the victim who had tried to slash his wrists a short time before. Another victim who pretends to be gravely ill for attention wakes up in a cell filled with broken glass and lit only by a candle. He is informed he is suffering from a slow-acting poison whose antidote is in a safe - the combination is written among hundreds of possibilties on the walls and he is slathered with flammable goo.

Jigsaw's only survivor is Amanda; a drug user who wakes up in a chair with a nightmarish contraption on her head that is wired into her jaw. She is shown a video of the device which is like a reverse bear trap - it springs open on a timer and will rip her jaw off. The key to remove the mask is in the stomach of a dead man in the chamber with her. Amanda tears the ropes off of her hands and stands up, pulling a string which starts the timer... ticktickticktick. She finds a tiny blade and recovers the key - turns out Jigsaw lied; the man is not dead, only drugged into paralysis. She removes the headpiece and is greeted by a mechanical doll who rides up on a tricycle to congratulate her. Amanda, who has quit using heroin, tells the police, "He helped me..."

The tiny key in the bathroom opens a box with a cellphone that can only receive calls. The doctor gets a call from his wife who says "Don't believe Adam's lies!" Turns out the photographer knows the doctor. He had been hired to take clandestine photographs of him cheating on his wife. Seems his employer is a hospital assistant who does not care for the doctor, and is holding his wife and daughter at gunpoint. Jigsaw wants the doctor to kill the photographer before the clock hits six or his wife and daughter will be murdered. The photographer realizes that a mirror on the wall is actually one-way glass and throws a tile, shattering it, revealing a whole surveillence system watching what they do. The doctor realizes, "He doesn't want us to cut through the chains, he wants us to cut through our feet."

The video from one of the killings finally yields an image that leads the police to a warehouse. No Jigsaw, but they find a model of the bathroom the two men are imprisoned in, and under a tarp an unfortunate man who is headlocked into a machine with two drills on either side aimed right at his temples. Someone returns to the warehouse, and the police cover the very upset victim and hide to see if they can capture him. When they try, Jigsaw starts the machine which begins to vice the drills together towards the trapped unfortunate victim's head. The cops can stay and try about 50 keys to release the man or chase the culprit. One cop instead uses his gun to destroy the drill bits, rescuing the man, then chases after the killer only to trip a wire that triggers six shotguns above a doorway, killing the policeman instantly. The other cop is injured in the fight but the suspect gets away.

The doctor finds another clue in which Jigsaw hints to him that there are other ways to kill Adam besides a gun. The dead man between them apparently killed himself because of "too much poison in his blood" and the doctor pretends to poison a cigarette in the blood, instead tossing the photographer a safe one. The photographer pretends to die, only to be jolted back to "life" -- yes the chains are also electrified.

The time ticks away and the doctor's assistant goes to murder the wife and daughter...but the wife has managed to untie herself and gets hold of the gun during a fight which the doctor hears over the cellphone - uncomprehending, he tourniquets his leg and saws off his foot, shoots at Adam and tries to escape, only to be stopped by the doctor's assistant. Adam is only wounded and bludgeons the assistant with the toilet tank lid. They find that the doctors' assistant has a tape in his pocket...playing it reveals the assistant also has been poisoned by Jigsaw and his task was to monitor the doctor and photographer via surveillence and kill two people if the doctor doesn't complete his task...in order to receive his antidote.

The "dead" man who has been in the room the entire time gets up. It is Jigsaw ... revealed to be one of the doctor's patients who will soon be dying of a malignant brain tumor and has decided to teach people a lesson of how valuable life is. He locks Adam in the room in the darkness, explaining the key to his chain is in the bathtub...the one we saw go down the drain at the beginning of the movie.

46. *SPOILER TALK*
So, in sawing off his own foot does the doctor live and win his freedom? Does Adam die or does he still have the saw and the opportunity to take off his own foot and live?

47. *CONTINUED SPOILER TALK*
It's actually left open to interpretation. The last you see of the doctor is him dragging himself, minus foot, out the door to "see his family". Adam is closed in the room, allegedly without the key to his chains. My interpretation was that the doctor gets out (having done what Jigsaw asked him to and having the sense to tie off his stump) and that Adam dies. I argued with someone at work who insisted that they *both* died, the doctor bleeding to death. It's never made clear exactly how far the room is from an exit. I've read that the foot supposedly makes an appearance in the sequel.

There are probably some details I got wrong, especially as far as exact order, and I'm a little fuzzy on the ending since it all happens very fast. The story is told out of sequence - the previous victims and investigation is shown in flashback, Danny Glover as the wounded cop who survived the almost-capture of Jigsaw/Zep (Zep is the assistant's nickname). Adam at points discovers clues that he strategically doesn't reveal to the Doctor to save himself, and there's some confusion and a logic leap when the wife gets the gun from Zep and *does not immediately shoot him* ... I forget how it plays out exactly.

If you'd like to get a sense of the movie, there is an interactive website that will show you the type of experience you're in for if you ever decide to watch the movie:

Edited on Sun Oct-23-05 01:23 PM by tjdee
But wouldn't Jigsaw go and kill the doctor since he had time, LOL, now that he's just left Adam to die?

I think Adam has more of a chance of being alive than the doctor....but I'm just going by what you've posted (thanks!)...but then, MINOR SPOILER FOR SAW II below...

since neither of the guys are listed in the cast for the second one, I guess they both died? Hmm. Shawnee Smith is in this one too. As is Donnie Wahlberg, as a cop.

Jigsaw's trick though is he doesn't kill people outright. He gives them a grisly chance to survive.

I'm sure Shawnee is in the second one to explain the rules to the unfortunate folks.

52. No, it's just one of the rare ones whose trailer grabbed me.
I saw Shawnee Smith in the jawtrap scene and I was disturbed for about two days thinking about it.

I read Fangoria magazine when I was younger. I am horrified in my soul by scenes of torture, but certain type of horror movies that are elevated to operatic Grand-Guinol type levels interest me. I really liked THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, THE CELL, and CABIN FEVER. I don't want to see someone chop someone else up; I want to see horror that safely won't happen. (Yes, I technically know the events in SILENCE could happen, but that movie wasn't about watching people get killed.) Conversely, I enjoy science fiction that I *would* like to see happen.

I have weird tastes in movies. I very much like intricate plotting as well. SAW had some flaws, but did a great job with thrashing about making you believe everyone was the killer or involved ... and had some of the most imaginatively thought out moments of terror recently. The sequel looks like it will capitalize on the puzzle-trap thing, which is fine. A high-stakes AND THEN THERE WERE NONE is a movie you want to see during Halloween.

The writer/directors of SAW are working on another film called SILENCE which is about a ventriloquist's dummy which I'm sure will be the most absolutely terrifying movie ever, as ventriloquists dummies are naturally scary. In the 70's there was a movie called MAGIC whose commercials gave me nightmares as it was just a closeup of a dummy's face reading poetry. I don't know if the movie is anywhere near as terrifying as that commercial.

There are some I still won't watch. But if there's a movie you really want to see but are scared of, try watching it with the director's commentary on. That's the only way I was able to see part of THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE when they showed it this way on IFC.

57. Everybody should watch Aguirre
I saw it for the first time at as part of Herzog retrospective and for once an entire audience remained in their seats for a good while. The only other time I've witnessed that was for 'Requiem for a Dream'.

59. "Miracle Mile"...can be pretty depressing, also....
...it is supposed to be an anti-"accidental" war movie....

I usually find myself curious about something in most movies...even if it just the scenery, architecture or fashions...

55. Only movie I've ever seen...
...where EVERYONE in the theater was openly and loudly heckling it, MST3K style. Made a dreadful movie much more enjoyable.

And then they were all laughing at that guy sleeping three rows up.

Hah! I can't believe they made a sequel. To its credit, it's a creepy and creative concept...just HORRIBLY "executed."

58. I watched it during the day.
I wanted to see it so badly, but I knew it would scare me shitless. So, I chickened out and watched it while the sun was still out.
