A dilemma I need your help with (Wal-MArt)...
SO my mother-in-law just got laid off. The company she worked for classified her as a "temporary" employee-for the last ELEVEN YEARS. So, no health benefits, no 401K, and no severance. She does, however, qualify for unemployment benefits.
She's been sending out applications all over the place, and got an interview and job offer from...you guessed it, Wal-Mart. Cashier, $7.35/ hour, and she wants to take it. Theywant to hire her as "full time" but told her that her "actual" hours "might vary", which sounds to me like they are setting the conditions to screw her over for health benefits and overtime-not to mention the fact that she'll have to drive 48 miles round trip.
She wanted to know what my husband and I think, and I'm stuck. I know the pay sucks, but she's not likely to pull much better as she is 60 years old, and has a only a high school diploma.
I can't imagine her driving all that way for that low of wages. Right now I think the gas prices alone would eat up her paycheck, and although I don't know if this particular Wal-Mart treats it's employees well or not, I just shudder to think of her possibly being exploited by them. She's a damn fine woman and deserves to be treated decent and fair.
She's a hard worker, she raised two kids, on her own, on minimum wage (deadbeat ex-husband) so trust me, she's no shrinking violet, but she does have difficulty making her own decisions.
I think she could probably find something that pays the same closer to home, but then again, what if she doesn't? I also know that she hates, absolutely HATES being on unemployment, and I also know that she could really use that employee discount for groceries, her medications etc...
I know the simple answer is to tell her to take the job and keep looking, but I know my MIL won't. If she takes the job, she'll stay there. That's just the way she is (she says she doesn't believe in "job hopping").
She told them she wanted the weekend to think about it.

What would you tell her?
