Recommend a band/album for my current playlist
Right now, I have some random Minor Threat, Descendants 'Fat' ep, some Suicidal Tendencies, Bad Religions first album (How Could Hell Be Any Worse), some random Perkele & I'm just throwing myself around the apartment getting ready.
Suggestions?

60. I think I just fell in love.
I haaaaate the Jesus and Mary Chain with a passion. They pioneered the wimpy, whispery "I think I'm on Drugs"-style of vocalization that made college radio so boring in the late 80's. I hold them responsible for a lot of horrible music.

In other words:

Wolf Parade. The rest of their album blows goats, however.

Have you checked out Antony and the Jonsons yet?

I assume EP stands for Extended Play. What is the difference? I don't know. Is it like a little longer then a single but not 12 songs?

43. An EP is usually just 5 or six tracks as kind of "filler" material...
The Mars Volta's newest album was supposed to be 5 tracks long, but their label made them split up the last song (a 30 minute track) into more tracks, so it would qualify as an LP and not an LP.

Not sure what the exact rules are these days, but here's what it says on Wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extended_play

"The term is also sometimes applied to compact discs with short playing times. However, since a CD can carry any amount of material up to around 80 minutes, the distinction between a CD EP and a short CD LP is somewhat arbitrary and is based on artistic and marketing factors. For example, EPs are usually released as a promo or as a method for an artist to release a collection of songs unfit for an album. Some artists prefer to use the term "mini-album" instead of "EP", bringing a stronger significance to the work instead of it being counted as a mere add-on to an artist's discography."

Sounds like Flipper "Generic" album would go with all that pretty well.

But if you want to break cadence a bit, any of the early Stooges albums would be perfect.

I got more compliments on that shirt...I wish I still had it.

I used to work at a studio here in Los Angeles called Rumbo Recorders. Bad Religion recorded "Stranger Than Fiction" there and we got to know the guys quite well. Great guys...and very smart! Greg Graffin was working on his Ph.d at Cornell at the time.

Good playlist you've got going!!

36. Uncel Remus, Frank Zappa
Wo, are we movin' too slow?
Have you seen us,
Uncle Remus . . .
We look pretty sharp in these clothes (yes, we do)
Unless we get sprayed with a hose
It ain't bad in the day
If they squirt it your way
'Cept in the winter, when it's froze
An' it's hard if it hits
On yer nose
On yer nose
Just keep yer nose
To the grindstone, they say
Will that redeem us,
Uncle Remus . . .
I can't wait till my Fro is full-grown
I'll just throw 'way my Doo-Rag at home
I'll take a drive to BEVERLY HILLS
Just before dawn
An' knock the little jockeys
Off the rich people's lawn
An' before they get up
I'll be gone, I'll be gone
Before they get up
I'll be knocking the jockeys off the lawn
Down in the dew

Frank was all about exposing hypocrisy. It's hard
to understand from these lyrics but to see him do this
song live was sublime.

Lets knock some jockeys off rich peoples lawns...

They are a really amazing Welsh band. Since you seem to be into punk, you would probably like their earlier work . Their second album, Radiator, is great.

If you are fealing more adventurous, go for Guerrella or their new album, Love Kraft.

Also, as somebody before me suggested, no music collection is complete without some Radiohead. (Greatest band ever...ever!!)

Mike Keneally- stream his music at www.radiokeneally.com

Keneally is a guitarist/pianist/vocalist/composer who spent time in Zappa's band and played for a while with Steve Vai. His stuff runs the gamut from Todd to XTC to Bacharach to Stravinski to Zappa... with radiokeneally, tune in and- if you find you don't like it- give it a few more minutes and you'll hear something completely different.

and then there's my recently re-discovered favorites: Psychedelic Furs

77. Who could dislike country acid house rock?
Really, I think that's one of my all-time favorite albums. Heard it on NPR back in '97, '98 while on the way back to DC from Roanoke. I remember it was such a relief they were covering something besides the Lewinsky issue at the time.

I've so far given away 4 copies to various friends and am constantly proselytizing their sound. The lyrics and arrangements are so clever and catchy. I can't believe the album didn't generate more attention in music circles.

80. I wish their follow-up albums had been as good
But that album is a tough act to follow. An absolute classic. I've worn out every song on it. If you have the US version, the song 'Mao Tse Tung Said' has been badly truncated. Only the UK version has the best part of the song, where Jim Jones interacts with a very sweet little old lady named Millie. I think I'll play it right now...

82. I remember checking out their follow-up
Edited on Mon Oct-24-05 07:22 AM by Tallison
a couple years ago, and it just didn't do anything for me. Can't remember what specifically, but you're right about Exile being a tough act to follow. It's a masterpiece album. Originally I had the UK version, which was stolen, then thanks to having to replace it that very day (can't go long without it), I wound up with the US. Great dance music, too, though I've never heard it played in a club!?!

:wtf:

74. Gogol Bordello
Edited on Sun Oct-23-05 03:48 PM by Merrick
Categorized as "Gypsy Punk" they're certainly original - a blend of punk and traditional Ukranian/Balkan style gypsy music featuring an accordian and violin player. I'm actually seeing them tonight - looking forward to a rambunctious evening full of people slinging vodka, swinging from the chandeliers.

Another couple of votes for The Arcade Fire, and the most underrated hard core band ever: Neurosis

I recommended them above as well.

The singer is in that new film with Elijah wood, "Everything is Illuminated" as his translator.

100. Love them
I just recently downloaded "Start Wearing Purple" and "When the Trickster Starts Walkin."

They are definitely a fun band and the instrumentation really kind of blows me away.

95. John Vanderslice "Cellar Door."
Edited on Mon Oct-24-05 11:52 AM by alfredo
His newest CD "Pixel Revolution" is more laid back, but still very good. Cellar Door is more overtly angry.

I've been pushing this singer for some time. He really shows promise.

Read his lyrics and see just one of his many talents.
