If you are doing what you want to do, what you love (even if it's only part of your life) that's what matters! Not everybody is college material; i.e. not everyone wants to go to college. I do have a degree, and have had to take additional classes because the industry I work in decided my 15 years of direct experience just aren't enough, and what I say about that is "academic snobbery"!!! Not that I have anything against education or bachelor's. master's, or PhD's, but I also have nothing against folks who don't have 'em. Not everything requires a degrees. Besides, I think you're pretty damned loveable, MrScorpio! :loveya:

So, can I ask what kind of job you are looking for? It's possible you don't need a degree; maybe you only need particular classes. One of the things you might want to do is look at what kind of skills you have demonstrated in the work you have done thus far, plus any hobbies, etc., that may require some particular talent and/or skills. If you don't want to answer in open forum, please PM me. Maybe I can help give you some ideas.

11. Mr. S. There are people out there who *hate* me because I have a |

college degree. The best I can say on this is there's a lot *hate* in the world right now. Some will find any excuse, especially in the workplace, to attempt to diminish someone. Wish I could say more.

It confuses people because they seem to think my bookishness means I should have a degree.
What really brings the hate is two things: I have no work ethic and no respect for authority. I try not to be too obvious about it, but my self-editing function glitches sometimes, and it only takes two or three incidents to get fired for being a smartass.

In the few years I've been working professionally, I haven't even recouped the costs of the tuition for the private, allegedly "good" college I went to.
I currently work at a crappy job a trained monkey could do. The only difference is I don't hurl feces at my co-workers.

"Eye" enlisted in the Navy a long time ago, and took both of their eye technician courses. I was payed to learn. I am now employed as an ophthalmic photographer. I also recently moved from a renter to a landlord. It's not the words on the parchment, it's the desire in the heart.

You know i have asked that very question to my self often. As i see it having a college degree doesn't make you a better candidate for any thing It simply means that you dedicated your self to pushing the envelope for a quest of knowledge. there are more educated derelicts in the world now then ever before, and in the industry that i was a part of for over thirty years we used to call people like that college educated idiots. just having a degree in something doesn't mean that you can comprehend the needs of people you work with. I myself am for the most part self taught, mostly out of necessity rather than by choice I couldn't afford to attend a college.. therefor I found other means to educate myself and found that in fact i had gained a better idea for what was expected of me and how to accomplish those means. when i did finally take the mensa test i found that i had over a college level I.Q. Now does that mean i am better? the answer is NO but what it means is that i am just as qualified as someone that did manage to get a degree from college, In my case it was purely by attrition and self will that i accomplished my goal. Like you i hate the notion that we are not a good candidate simply because we don't have a piece of paper that says we are better! After all that is what it really amounts too a piece of paper not what your knowledgeable of. It truly is a sad state of affairs that as a society, we have been taught this lesson and continue to use that piece of paper as a reason to exclude people from jobs, when they actually may be the most qualified for it simply through personal experience. At my age (51) I have found myself looking once more for a place in the work force that in it's self is hard enough having to overcome the age barrier and i personally think that my life experiences should indeed count for something not my education. I hope that the lessons learned here will help you in your quest for what you believe in and good luck. for me I will continue to strive to always be the better person and persevere with pride in the knowledge that i can do what ever it takes whether or not they think otherwise.

But sometimes it is fun to surprise the lettered classes with a shot of intelligence, especially when it is delivered in High Hick language.

Dad did eventually get his GED and an associate's degree when I was about 7 or 8. He had a long career both in and out of the service. So, if he did it, you can.

and i can't remember the last time someone asked me. I have one from Northeastern in accounting, looking back now i wished i'd taken something i actually liked instead of doing what my father said i should. I should have studied architecture and maybe in a few years i'll have enough money to go back to school and do that.

Some people have treated me as if I have a lower level of intelligence than someone who has a degree.
A few years after I dropped out of college, I went to a "career school" (Vo-tech, whatever you want to call it).

I remember a prof asking me whether I could pass a test. asshole. I remember living in Iowa City where people with Phd's are thicker than hair on a dog and being looked down on. And even with the job I have now the first thing those godless bastards in inHuman Resources focused on was my lack of a BA/BS. Now that I have one, do you think they care.
