Have you ever been a part of another online community? |
|
Are you still a part of it or did you move away from it?
For a few years, I participated in a mom's group, but eventually it just didn't fit who I was or where I was at any longer, so I moved on.
Just wondering.

1. Yes, for a hobby interest. There was an "off topic" section for |
|
discussion of things like politics etc. I used to post political posts, threads. There was violent argument all the time especially around the campaign. The people there who oppose the shrub are about as numerous as the wingnuts, perhaps even a little more so.
Bottom line, I got tired of being called names, it wasn't that I was afraid to argue or debate but the unpleasantness of it just got to me, got me down, and I quit posting there. That and the futility, for me at least, of trying to convince any dyed in the wool Bush supporter of any errors in their facts or in their ways. I applaud those who may have actually convinced people on neutral forums, I guess I just don't know how to do it.
I still glance at it sometimes. Not nearly as active now.

Sounds like the same group I belonged to at one board, but the abuse from one asshole was more than I could take. He's still there; many good people have left because of others abusing them as well.
On the other hand, I belong to a small group elsewhere where we've known each other for over 4 (in some cases 5) years, and we do both a Xmas card exchange and a Secret Santa among ourselves.

I have a moms' group I'm part of. My interest in posting/reading there fulltime seems to go in cycles, but since I've met a lot of the women on there in person (there are about 40 of us), I tend to try to keep up, even when things are crazy.

Bartcop has one thing that DU doesn't, a chat room! Unfortunately it rarely has any participants.
I also love Democrats.com, but not because of its forums!
DU is a shining light for all liberals on the internet. :toast:

9. Years ago I used to participate in Guardian Unlimited Talk |
|
That's the talkboards on The Guardian newspaper's website. It was pretty cool, although there were a few too many freepers there for my liking. They were giving you Americans a bad name. :(
I also post on linuxquestions.org when I have problems with my computer, or to help other people with their own problems. :)

Was there for years, until they went pay for play. I stayed for a while, but so many people left it wasn't fun anymore.
I learned about DU from Salon, so it was just a matter of evolving. And I'm been a member of DU much longer than my profile suggests. I've been here since 2000, but I've gone through a few name changes because of password issues and such.
I'm a member of many, many list server groups that are hobby or work related and have been for many years.

as the free days counted down, at Salon. Then at The American Prospect before the forums were killed off. And I knocked around the edges of The Atlantic for awhile.
I've been at DU since Day One, mostly as a lurker, and I've had more than one screen name, also due to password amnesia.

14. yes, i joined another political board in 99 and eventually |
|
i learned about DU from them and i don't participate there anymore which i feel kind of bad about because it was a pretty good place but you only have time for so much. Also one the people from there came over here and ended up kind of outing herself as a freeper and the other place defended her, that made me unhappy.

I've been part of a certain online community since 1994, on the Usenet. I'm actually one of the "old geezers" now who doesn't show up daily but who always seems to draw attention (both good and bad) when he does.
I guess you could say I've moved away from it, but not really. I still read the forum daily, but participating is sometimes not enjoyable now. The subjects discussed tend to repeat, and while I love a good argument, I don't love having to repetitively dismantle the bizarre notions of the regular stream of newbies who seem to assume no one but them has ever thought about that subject before.

I also posted for a while at Guardian talk, but didn't like the format or the constant freeper attacks.

One of the best was the old Free Speech Zone on AOL in the mid-'90s. It was sponsored by the ACLU and supposedly the only place on AOL where you could say "fuck." It got quite heated at times, which was good training for other forums.
Including this one. :7

I've posted on other political forums in the past. I currently post on a music forum that seems to have been taken over by dj's pissed off at corporate radio. I also post on a few forums for Survivor(one is for speculation and spoiling the season so I usually have a good idea of who's getting kicked off in what order). And some Yahoo groups.
