Jazz Singer, Pianist Shirley Horn Dies

By NEKESA MUMBI MOODY AP Music Writer

October 21,2005 | NEW YORK -- Shirley Horn, the jazz pianist and vocalist who got her start opening for Miles Davis and became revered as a master interpreter of American standards, has died at the age of 71, her record label said Friday.

Horn died Thursday night in her native Washington, D.C., after a long illness, according to a statement released by Verve Records.

Horn was often compared to Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald and Carmen McRae, and considered one of the last great jazz vocalists of her era. She told The Associated Press in a 1991 interview she didn't think "there's a category for me. I like to be referred to as a good singer of good songs in good taste."

She started playing the piano when she was a child, and by the time she was a college student at Howard University, she had put together her first jazz trio. Her talent drew the attention of music legend Quincy Jones, who would produce her first albums, as well as Miles Davis, who asked her to open for him at the renowned Village Vanguard at 1960.

2. I'm indeed surprised that this was moved from LBN to the Lounge
Shirley Horn was part of America jazz culture and very popular at one time. She deserves better than to be droppedlike a rock from the etches of time.

Horn's trademark: exquisitely slow tempo and sensitively savored lyric, effortlessly melded. Heart and soul expressed at a piano bench.

Shame on you mr./ms Moderator

3. Agreed

If Mick Jagger or Bono had died they would have kept it LBN.

7. I don't get why it isn't LBN either.
:wtf:

And I agree that if it were Jagger, McCartney, f***ing Michael Jackson(!), etc... it wouldn't have been moved.

9. I'm sure that's the case. But a little common sense and a google
would have helped.

10. When Sonny Rollins and Dave Brubeck pass away, I hope they make LBN.
Hell, they'd better.

6. It's so sad how our jazz foremothers

are summarily ignored. Shirley Horn's work and story are absolutely remarkable. People were tellin' her she couldn't do what she wanted to do (an album of ballads) FOR DECADES. When she finally got it done the damn thing flew STRAIGHT to the top of the charts and STAYED THERE. She was an incredible inspiration as an artist on ALL levels.

But obviously not significant enough to some that news of her passing warrants mention...
