A man who lay dead in his car for several days, slumped over the steering wheel, received a parking ticket two days before his body was found.
The 71-year-old, who has not been named, was discovered on Thursday with a parking penalty notice placed under his windscreen wiper at a shopping centre in the Australian city of Melbourne. He had been reported missing to police and was known to be seriously ill.
Council officials have apologised for the incident. Peter Denham, Mayor of Maroondah, said that the parking attendant had failed to notice the man when he issued the ticket. Mr Denham added that the officer attended the shopping centre only once a week and was likely to have missed the body because the car had tinted windows and the driver’s seat was apparently reclined.
The mayor said that shoppers entering and leaving the store had also failed to notice the driver’s body.
