Do foreigners like our accents as much as we like theirs? |
|
Last night I was at a debating tournament and this dude from Ireland was speaking and I kept thinking "well, at least he *sounds* cool". And it got me wondering...
Do people abroad like the way Americans speak? The first encounter I had with this was when I was 9 and I was taking a ferry from Britain to France. I was talking with another boy and I said "I'm from America", and he replied "I know, I could tell because of your accent". And I was all like "no, you're the one with the accent".
So, I think we all have one foreign accent we really like. I personally do a good Russian accent that everybody likes. But my question is, have people from abroad ever said "I really like your American accent"?
Or more importantly, have they ever said "That cute boy from Colorado has a really sexy American accent!"

2. if you're a women with a southern accent |
|
The men might find it sexy.
If you're black and speak in an inner city ebonics dialect, they will find it interesting.
If you're from NY and speak like they did in Goodfella's, they will also find it interesting.
If you're from Texas and speak like the shrub, they will find it annoying.

3. An accent is cool anywhere |
|
so if you are somewhere where you speak the language in a different sounding way, people will notice and ask you about it, like we do when we find accented people in our midst. Contrary to what the war mongering neocons would have everyone believe, people are the same everywhere, same feelings, same curosities and the like.
I am very fond of Mancunian accents, and East and South London accents. I like RP ok, but I prefer the rougher, more colourful accents best. I am fond of a bit of Strine and Kiwi, as well.
And a lot of people in GB thought my 'Canadian' accent was really sexy. (I am from the Pacific NW)
