My Cable Modem Connection Keeps Getting Slower And S-l-o-w-e-r... |
|
... and less and less responsive. Sometimes I assume that it's just the site I happen to be visiting, but then I'll surf elsewhere, and it's the same.
I'll shutdown and restart my system, clear my cache, etc etc.. no improvement. Nothing seems to help. Then the next morning... it zips along at breakneck speeds again.
When Comcast is working... it works great. But it sure is annoying to know what it's SUPPOSED to be like, and not have it perform that way.
I know that cable-modems are supposed to be faster than DSL, but I've also heard that DSL connection speeds are more reliable, less sluggish at times, more constant and predictable.
Is that true?
Should I give up my Comcast cable connection and go with Verizon DSL? It would certainly be cheaper... first month free, $20 per month for the next two months, $30 per month thereafter. (Compared to over $60 per month for Comcast.)
What do you think?

1. I'm so fed up with my cable, I'm dumping them. |
|
Just waiting for the DSL modem to get here. I'll be saving $20/month, too, so it's worth a try.
Every time the cable goes down, I call and ask for a refund. Then they make me go through the tech support, who tells me "it's slow in your area." Like I don't know? Slow means SLOW to the point that I can't get a connection for hours at a time. Then they blame it on my router and I know for sure they're full of it.
I think DO IT. Do it now. :hi:

5. I just got mine a few days ago. |

It seems to be just fine. I what suppose to be a really fast cable connection but then I moved.
My choice was Comcast or DSL. I just think Comcast is so expensive around here so I chose DSL. I really like it. It seems faster than my old cable connection.

2. I know that w/cable you're on the same segment as many other folks... |
|
So if they're gaming or downloading, your performance goes down like the Titanic on lead weights.
That and/or you've got spyware or something nasty on your system. Spybot (downloaded from pcworld.com's website) or ad-aware from lavasoft.com will clean that stuff up in a jiffy...
I love my DSL. Dedicated line and good performance all 'round. (7mb down, 1mb up...)

3. Am I just lucky or what? |
|
I have to wonder. I see these posts fairly regularly as you all do. Slow cable, no connection etc etc. For some reason(knock on wood) I rarely lose my connection(I am on comcast), it rarely slows down. There have been a few times, since I have had cable(3 years)due to severe weather or some other such activity where I have lost a connection, but it's been back within an hour, never much more then that. If it slows down, I reboot the modem, clean up my computer and reboot it and generally everything goes back to normal. Most of the time the internets slow down for me is due to certain sites having their own problems. Again, I dunno..maybe I am just lucky....for now.

6. On the Kim Komando show today . . . |
|
She expressed the opinion that users should be charged by the extent of their use. For example, I think if your neighbor is constantly downloading movies, it slows your connection down. They found a guy who had downloaded 15 terabytes.

9. I'm Thinking That Constant... Acceptable Speeds Are Better... |
|
... even if they are "slower" than Comcast's fastest possible speed (which I only get some of the time).
What can I do with that extra $30 per month??

10. Can anyone tell me how much slower DSL is than cable? |
|
I'm tired of paying comcast 130 bucks a month for tv and computer. On the weekends I can't get half my favorite channels, and and once a month the cable slows down to dial-up speed.

11. Its honestly going to depend... |
|
From my experience, I was getting very high speeds during the afternoon and during the evening I was getting close to dial up with comcast. On the weekends it was basically like being on dial up.
I also didnt like with comcast if I wanted to 'share' my internet connection I'd have to pay per computer. I got around that but its still the point.

13. That's Almost Exactly Like My Exeriences With Comcast. |
|
Even in consideration of the few periods of the day that I'm actually able to hit top speed, it doesn't make up for ALL the other times that I'm USUALLY online that I poke along at 126Kbps (or slower).
You've helped me to make up my mind. -- Besides, the Verizon offer allows me to try it for 30-days and cancel without a penalty if I decide it's not for me.
I'm going to do it!
Thanks Purr and everyone!
