Man Accused Of Shoplifting 342 Bras

A New York man faces first-degree larceny and other charges after two off-duty Greenwich officers discovered 342 bras he allegedly shoplifted from Victoria's Secret and stashed in a van, police said.

"I've never heard of anything like this," said Lt. Richard Cochran of the Greenwich Police Department, acting department spokesman.

Ricardo Salazar, 25, of Elmhurst, N.Y., is accused of taking more than $20,000 in lingerie and shoes on Sunday. He also is charged with possession of a shoplifting device.

Cochran said a search of a van Salazar was using uncovered $14,135 worth of Victoria's Secret bras, still on the store hangers, and $856 worth of sleepwear from the intimate apparel retailer at 200 Greenwich Ave. The stolen bras, Cochran added, were "in different colors and sizes, and cost between $32 and $50 each." Merchandise valued at $5,024 from Shoes-n-More at 251 Greenwich Ave., also was recovered.

Off-duty Greenwich police officers Chris and Christy Girard, in a car, observed Salazar running east on East Elm Street with a J.C. Penney shopping bag, then ducking behind the van, according to a police report. Salazar emerged without the bag and without a jacket he had been wearing, according to the report, and he proceeded to walk north on Greenwich Avenue toward Victoria's Secret, preventing the officers from following in their vehicle because of traffic patterns.
