4. sausage rolls
and tubed sides were a handy substitute when a feathered hair cut grew out or when it never existed in the first place. By simply curling the sides of the hair into the shape of a long kielbasa a feathered hairstyle could be simulated.

This is an extreme version of horizontal sausage rolls. Notice the hair near the temple is going directly up forming a U above the eye:

3. the triangle
s one of the major elements of the middle-part feather back that sets it apart from "The Farrah". As you can see below, our geometry students below are all passing the class with honors...

The square of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares of the opposite sides. But, not in this case. Those of you who are careful observers, like Stefaan in Belgium, know that this triangle is equilateral, which means the angles are all 60 degrees. The Pythagorean Theorem only applies to right triangles, those with a 90 degree angle.

Two perfect equilateral triangles.

7. great plains
The Great Plain (the large vast forehead area barren of hair) is another large difference between the center-parted feather back style and "The Farrah". To accomplish this some women let their layers grow longer and keep them sprayed to the sides. Others employed horned arches at each side of the part to keep the hair from straying onto the forehead

Excellent use of horns to provide plenty of clear forehead.

8. the perma-wing

Feathered on top, scraggled every where else like ivy growing on a wall.

Fried.

The top left style has been outlawed in 12 states and 2 provinces in Canada. Michigan still retains this as the official State Hairdo.

Fire hazard.

10. the giza
Edited on Mon Oct-24-05 03:11 PM by sundog
The feathered back hairstyle gave birth to the unisex hair salon where both men and women went to get the same hairstyle. While the men usually wore their feathers in a shorter variation very similar to Dorothy Hamill's, many sported a longer, Jaclyn Smith inspired style. Either way, the style resembled an Egyptian pyramid placed on the men's heads and is therefore referred to on this site as "The Giza".
