Poll question: Best Rolling Stones guitarist? |
|
Mick Taylor could really play and mysteriously left the band in 1974. I love his licks.

but only Mick Taylor brought that sweetly singing tone and peerless sense of elegance and style that put the maraschino cherry on top of the sundae.
Exhibit A: "Can You Hear Me Knocking" Exhibit B: "Time Waits For No One"

Keith was / is a "feel player"...I don't care how much "formal training" (if ANY) he had. He's got something that most guitarists would die for...the ability to hit those strings and create a visceral, emotional response in the listener.
Mick Taylor was arguably the best "musician" to have ever been in the band. He has a truckload of style and finesse, but Ron Wood has always been the raggedy cat who looks like he came out on the bad end of a bar fight, and as a result, ended up being "more of a Stone" than Mick.
"Sticky Fingers" and "Exile on Main Street" remain the best OVERALL Stones albums.

4. keith is great, probably bst. but listen to mick taylor |
|
on "Time Waits for No One," for example. stunning work. He came up through John Mayall's Blues Breakers, a fine tutelige for any guitar player.
supposedly somebody asked him once why he left the Stones. His reply: "I value my life." the stones were hitting the dope pretty hard at that time, you see.,...

There would be no discussion about the Stone's guitarits to begin with, if it wasn't for Keef.
Seriously, most underated guitarist, ever.
Yes, I love the Taylor era, too, but I'm a hard core fan and I love all their eras.

9. Of course, they were all great. But the common denominator is |

Jagger and the Stones' rhythm section.

11. Keith is not in competition with the other three. He IS the backbone ..... |
|
....of the entire Rolling Stones sound.
Mick Taylor was probably the best of the three in terms of live performance. And from the studio bootlegs, he might have added a great deal to the Stones albums as well, but it appears that Keith got a bit territorial in the studio and held him back. It's long been rumored that Taylor decided to leave the Stones after Jagger & Richards faded out his solo on "Time Waits For No One"

12. That great "Sympathy For the Devil" solo was Keith's |
|
Uncomplicated, piercing solo.
The great disco bass on "Emotional Rescue" was Ron Wood's, not Bill Wyman like I used to think.

13. Tip of the hat to those that voted for Mick Taylor. |
|
He is a fantastic guitarist. I'm surprised that so many even remember he was a Stone! I think Brian Jones was the best musician the band ever had. They seemed to lose all direction after he died.

14. But two of their best albums followed Brian's death |

Sticky Fingers and Exile on Main Street. (And Let It Bleed was recorded largely without his input).
