Al Franken's glass house
The left's answer to Rush Limbaugh made his career calling other people liars. Now he's the one being accused of dishonest dealings
Kevin Steel - October 17, 2005
Is Al Franken a lying liar who tells lies? That's the $875,000 question being asked of the famous comedian and celebrity host on Air America, the left wing's answer to talk radio. Franken, author of Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them: A Fair and Balanced Look at the Right, is facing questions about whether he knew his bosses at the station had taken money from charity to help pay Franken's salary.
The New York-based Air America, which bills itself as "progressive talk radio," is defending itself against charges that it stole money from poor children. Last year, unable to find enough money to launch the station, management sought out investor Evan Cohen to raise capital. In January 2004, Cohen, then also a director of the Gloria Wise Boys and Girls Club based in New York's Bronx district, began transferring what would eventually amount to US$875,000 of club money to Air America as an "interest-free loan." It enabled the station to hire up big-name celebrities that would put it on the map: actress Janeane Garofalo, rapper Chuck D, and Franken. The loan was never repaid. (The city opened an investigation into Gloria Wise's finances soon after the loan was made and by May, Cohen had left the station and has gone into hiding.)
