Have you ever chose to learn from or study with a repub? |
|
Ever taken up a course of study, and your only choices to learn were with an obvious (or not so obvious) republican? Did you regret the decision? Was it a positive or negative experience?

Now that I think about it. He did let us know that he was more of a Bush supporter than a Kerry supporter.

that you've been able to maintain a good friendship with one who's views on some issues may oppose your own! Probably smart that you guys avoid political conversations, too.

9. I had a couple conservative profs in college |
|
One was a low-level history course (a survey-type course, not much room for debate) and the other was an econ course. Both were pretty good courses and I learned from them both.
If you want to be a semi-educated human being, you should try to learn from everybody, no matter what their political stripe.
Anything less is not education-- it's indoctrination.

so true--and such an important sentiment!
I suppose that if everyone were Dems life would be pretty boring--agreeing with everyone on everything would be some weird form of fusion. Eeeuuuw! LOL!
I appreciate your response and very thoughtful comments!
On edit--I have a physician that went to med school in a very conservative, republican place. If he had taken the stance of choosing to only study in 'liberal' areas--he may not have become a physician. :( My life would be a little darker, as he's a pretty cool doc! LOL!

One of my best classes ever! He and I disagree on just about everything, but the man is brilliant, and leads a fascinating life outside of school.
He taught me so many things, including how to be friends with someone with whom you so vehemently disagree and would normally not associate with. :)

I think it's very cool that it came from one who's views so directly opposed your own. I also think it's cool that you enjoyed the class so much and got to know about him on a personal level.
Love stories like this--Thanks, bi_baby!!:hi:

So yeah. I have had a few. But, their political affiliation never presented a problem. 95% of the time I wouldn't have known if it wasn't for discussions outside of class.

18. Now that I think about it... |
|
I went to two very liberal schools. Portland State University and the University of Oregon. The same professors might not have held back as much if they had been teaching in Nebraska. Fear of a backlash from a mostly liberal student-body might have altered how they teach. I'm not really sure how I feel about that. I big part of me isn't happy about it at all. A big part is.

20. I have a Republican / Fundy voice teacher. |
|
Edited on Mon Oct-24-05 10:37 PM by Ladyhawk
We used to be friends until he broke his promise not to try to proselytize me. If I want to take music classes, I have to take them from him. I just don't ever tell him anything important.
Thinking about the friendship he squandered still makes me sad, but he taught me something important: Never, any under circumstance, EVER trust a fundy.
It was a hard lesson, but I finally learned it.
On edit: at least he can't talk much about his religion or politics in a MUSIC class.

22. sure, I can work with Republicans, do it all the time |
|
I deal with serious, card-carrying Republicans a lot. They know I'm always going be well to the left of them on every issue. Sometimes I'm the lone ranger. But studying, working, or getting political objectives done, I can work with them, have done so, and will do so again.

24. I used to annoy both my left wing and right wing teachers at school |
|
When I first joined my high school, I was a relatively right wing conservative student (although not when it came to US politics as I had supported Bill Clinton during the 1992 presidential election) and was endorsing the conservative party in my country to win government. I used to gush to everyone and anyone about how wonderful the leader of the conservative party was (in all fairness he was a moderate conservative political leader and a few years ago he welcomed Gore to my country as the democratically elected President of the US). Apparently my left leaning teachers found it unbearable to listen to me (but they never showed their emotions and just nodded politely while I gushed about how wonderful the conservatives were)
Then our conservative party moved to the right and I gradually moved to the Left. In my final years of high school, I exchanged some verbal sparring with some of my right wing teachers who backed our right wing government but it was all done in fun and I still had excellent relationships with them and still thought that they were wonderful teachers.
At university most of my professors were either centre left or centre right. We had one centre right professor who I thought was rather right wing but he hated * and he disliked our conservative government so I found out that he was quite moderate in his political ideology. My best friend at university had a professor who was a right wing pro-Bush supporter who later became a right wing columnist but thankfully I never had him
