Anyone else here like New Age music?
I do! Sometimes I want to hear something relaxing without all the thumping drums and screaming voices, and I can put in a New Age CD or two and relax!

2. It's the genre of music that is...
mostly instrumental, most of it is electronic or synthesizer based although any new full orchestra compositions are considered New Age (Time Janis, for example).

3. Yeah, what is it? Are we talking like Enya here?
I'm quite partial to thumping drums myself, but I can see the attraction of the absence of them too.

4. Yes, Enya is considered New Age
although she is on the "outer fringes" of it. She's closer Pop music than New Age.

10. I listened to Enya when i was deployed on navy ships
with my walkman when i layed in my "rack" at night. I like some harsh industrial stuff/loud stuff, too, so I guess that was against what i would normally listen too.

20. I call if drift music as in my mind and spirit go on a flight of fancy.
It's music that takes you to a peaceful, sublime place. For me music is an emotional amplifier as in if I'm pissed off I listen to Jagged Little Pill, by Alanis Morissette. If I'm sad I listen to some old Bruce Springsteen. If I'm happy it's disco baby and for contemplation Loreena McKennitt.

8. My Wife Loves It!
I can take it or leave it. I don't like Enya much, but in general it's ok listening. Wouldn't want to play any of it, but i can listen. My wife is a Windham Hill nut, though.

12. Isn't it really ..... old age music?
Can't take the volume anymore?

(Personally, I find real jazz, and/or real classical much more interesting)

14. I can listen to Enya
but I LIKE thumping drums and preferably songs by really angry women screaming like banshees...

A matter of taste, I guess.

16. only the more "alternative" sounds
for lack of a better term. I've a fan of:

Steve Roach
Vidna Obmana
Harold Budd
Biosphere
Aphex Twin

They're typically classified as Ambient

artists like John Tesh and Yanni I find boring. They're performers using factory presents on basic synths. The aforementioned artists are advanced sound designers who create atmospheric moods and soundscapes that can be quite evocative & powerful as well as meditative.

I am also an ambient musician

I've been featured on Hearts of Space, Echoes, & XM Radio

18. Before the term "New Age"
I used to listen to Vangelis and Mike Oldfield. Does Kraftwerk count? But that was a long time ago. A while back, I pulled out a Vangelis tape. It sounded so dated. Or perhaps it was a mneminic for the time.

Now I have a couple Enya songs. Also, a Dutch group called Flairck. They're more folksy/classical without synthesizers - at least on the disque I have, recorded back in '78 (Variaties Op Een Dame).

19. Love a lot of New age style music, also love the inverse
Spent most of the morning listening to Front 242. About as opposed to New Age music as you can get. Harsh military sounds mixed to industrial beats. Acclectic tastes are cool. I love throwing my player on shuffle and hearing the mixes it comes up with.

I'm into ambient music in general, though more on the gothic spectrum of things. Then again I'm into industrial stuff too...turning my iTunes to shuffle produces some really interesting things. :D

25. Old Windham Hill Head Here.
The solo guitar and piano stuff was terrific, mostly.

I indulge in the occasional Enya or Arkenstone these days.

28. Hearts of Space is a great resource for new age music.
I used to listen to PBS radio program called "Hearts of Space" for about 15 years, this was before we got satellite TV that has lots of new age music. It is still on air and as good as ever.
Here is a link if you would like to give them a listen while you serf the net.
