4. I don't mean to ruin everything, but I think I have read why this is...

The full name of the state is "The State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantation". Before being united, what is now Rhode Island was basically split up between the area around the city of Providence and the area around the city of Newport. The area around Providence was called "Providence Plantation", the area around Newport, which is on Aquidneck Island I think, was called Rhode Island. After the two were united to form The State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantation, people just started calling it Rhode Island.

I may be completely wrong about this, if any Rhode Islanders could verify/ correct this that would be stupendous.
