Colum was a Spaniard. He claimed to be Italian because he was a Merc who fought against the Spanish King at one time. He hid that fact so that he could get funding for his voyage from Spain. Also, he didn't discover America. Maybe ya'll should call of Columbus Day and those silly parades. Sorry bout the bad news.

2. actually not
I have read that the guy was actually from Greece. His part of Greece was taken over by Italians so he was of nationality Italian
(kind of like Puerto Ricans are americans)
he wrote in Greek, he signed his name in greek. He did not speak Italian as a native, but it not a sure thing that he spoke spanish too well either.

I'm Italian and this information doesn't really disturb me

8. His bones and those of his son were dug up.
DNA on his bones could not be clear but his son's DNA pointed to him being of Spanish origin. In any case, Italians should let this go and find another hero to celebrate.

5. Spanky, if you think this is news to us Italians,
wake up. It's only the old men who want to keep Columbus Day. We want to change our day of celebration in the New World to Dante's birthday in June (at least our best guess, since we don't have an exact date).
