And that's the way it is! It was different during WWII.

I am open-minded. Feel free to argue otherwise. I will read.

8. Mine are not meaningless; I think the many folks who have memorial
tats would also disagree.
The first one I got is in memory of my daughter, killed by a drunk driver. It's a cross with a crown of thorns on it, and a rose blooming off the crown. It means a lot to me, and it wasn't cheap, and it's worth something to me, and that's the only thing that matters as long as it's on my bod.

Just my $.02 worth :)

9. A friend of mine has a memorial to her daughter who was killed by
a man who rear-ended her vehicle. When she got out to check the damage, he abducted and killed her. :(

Mine is also a memorial to someone who has died. I think that's probably pretty common.

15. If hipness is the goal, then I think ANYTHING would be the wrong thing to
do, whether it's a tattoo or clothing or a haircut or whatever.
If you do whatever it is regardless of coolness factor, that's what counts I think. Who's to judge anyhow? How does anyone go about deciding what's 'in' and what's 'out'? Never have figured that out!
(Not ranting at you, just the notion in general that 'hipness' can be defined by anybody...):)

26. I like them, but I can't imagine being stuck with the same design forever.
I like things to change, grow, evolve, etc... I always change my hair, for example. I would get bored having to stare at the same design I picked out when I was 20, for example.

And they look wierd on old people, especially cheap tattoos, when the colors fade and get blurry and fuzzy. Then they become splots that are just... splots.

38. *lol* I'll ask about the meaningful, and leave out the location!
The two I have hold a lot of meaning for me, and the third for which I have hopes is also highly symbolic. I have the memorial one for my daughter and then the unicorn from one-half of the British emblem. I want to have a banner added to that, of the Norwegian flag. Just found my birth-mom a few years ago and found out I am half British (hence the half of the emblem) and I was raised by Norskis in NE Iowa (hence the N banner)
What would be symbolic to you?

There's some high quality work being done out there. These guys (the artists) take what they do VERY seriously! I really admire what they do.

Sometimes I wish I had tried to get an apprenticeship and learn. It seems such a therapeutic art form for so many. Some of the expressions on people's faces after they get the work done--wow. Blows me away, the emotion they obviously feel seeing the finished piece on their body--amazing!

Part of my upbringing. My dad had one he got in the navy and hated it, he always wanted to get it removed but it was too expensive back then. The only other person I knew with tattoos was his brother, a lowlife who never amounted to anything.

I think some are pretty cool looking, just not for me or my kids if I have any say in it. Otherwise to each their own.

49. My grandfather had several and was ashamed of them all his life
He got them while in the Navy, big ones on his arms. He lived in South Florida but almost always wore long sleeve shirts to keep the tattoos covered. My grandmother couldn't stand them.

At least that taught my dad not to make the same mistake when he was in the Navy. Several of his buddies got drunk and dragged him to a tattoo parlor, but my dad says he was just sober enough to get out of there even after they dumped him in the chair and were picking out a design for him.

Lately, the madatory tattoos above a young girl's ass are cliche to the point of a black mark, IMO. Why be alone, when I can be a clone?

I like tattoos but I don't like tattoos in that area on women. IMO, when a woman wears a shirt that is short enough that it rides up at times, it can look like she has a hairy ass and hair growing up onto her lower back. Ugh!

Little bitty thing. About 1.5" long. Beautifully done. Cost $150. She is proud and the respect factor in high school went up a hundredfold. When a brilliant, beautiful and political young lady gets a tattoo, the grubs, Goths, and stoner's pay attention. And the prissies are jealous. It makes a statement. Like nothing else in life does.

At the end of July, a month before I left San Diego to go to work in Qatar, my best friend (and ex-fiance) went with me and held my hand while I got my first (and so far only) tat done. It's an inch and a half celtic knotwork circle on my right upper arm, done in green and black.

For me, it was done for spiritual reasons, and to mark a transition point in my life. I realize they're not for everyone though.

61. You'll never see me with any tattoos...
but I'll disagree with the meaningless, worthless, and cheap. From what I've read in this thread, and from talking with tattooed folk, there's a story (usually interesting, though more often not ;) ) behind almost every one. They've got meaning and worth to their bearers whether we un-tatooed folk care or not, and they're not cheap, they're damn expensive! For me, I just don't want anything etched into my body for the rest of my life. But hey, to each his (or her) own, and I realize those who are into tattoos are really passionate about them, and one person's tattoos don't affect me personally.

65. I change my mind entirely too much about it to ever actually get one.
So no worries here.

when i posted "i agree" the other night. I learned to let people's negative opinions of tats not bother me. i got much more positive response then I do negative. trust me on that one. *wink* I have NO REGRETS. I LOVE my tats, but i am not going to take it personal and get insulted because others hate them! :hi:

68. It's a fine line between totally cool
and totally tacky.

For the tat aficianados (sp), what determines a "high quality" tat? And how do you go about shopping for a tat that will still look good x years down the road?

69. There are all kinds of tattoos...
Some are frivolous, some regrettable, others hold deep meaning for the bearer...

70. They have a lot of meaning in a cultural context.
Many cultures use them in a meaningful way. They certainly aren't cheap. And, sometimes, they can be very beautiful.

To each his own, though.

75. You should see some irezumi
It's the Japanese large-scale tattooing that covers a major portion of the tattooed person's body. There's some work being done in that style that's really beautiful.

Having said that, I do know someone who has lots of tattoos but the earliest ones he got were mostly "flash," and they don't look so good. ("Let's see--gimme that dreamcatcher and...um...ooh! That panther!") Most of the really good ones I've seen were ones that had some personal meaning to the person who got them and they had at least some input into the final design.

One of the logos of my hometown:

I haven't decided which one, but it'll probably go on my left bicep.

Will you dislike me after I get my tattoo?

84. Generalizations are idiotic, stupid, meaningless, cheap and worthless
You're stating your opinion. You're entitled to it. That doesn't make it right.

86. my daughter and son
both have tattoos. I told my son when he was in highschool, he had to wait until he was eighteen for a tattoo. one day, he took off his shirt (he was 17) and he had a tribal tattoo on his shoulder. He forgot--well what's done is done. My daughter created her own tattoo on her ankle--she's an Aries, so it's a flame around her ankle with a ram's head. Very well done. You know, it's their bodies and tattoos are symbols that have meaning to the individual.
