So I rented the movie "Saw"... |

thinking maybe that "Saw 2" would be worthy of a halloweenkend movie viewing...I haven't seen the whole thing yet(1/2 hour or so to go)-so i can't really give any 'spoilers' BUT- one thing REALLY bothers me about it- the "pipes" they are chained to appear to be main sewer 'stacks'- they're made of either cast iron or even fired clay- and are fairly fragile. since they're drainage pipes, they don't have to be concerned with pressure. The guys that are chained up could probably break them just by kicking them.

1. What? You expect facts and accuracy in that type of movie? |

Or any movie where the plot revolves around a computer. Hacking an alien computer system with a Mac? :banghead:

"Saw" several months ago---I didn't like it. I like horror movies that scare...not disgust. I have no desire to see "Saw 2". They just don't seem to make suspenseful horror movies anymore. They seem to be more nauseating than scary.

5. Only a handful (if that) |
|
of today's filmmakers get that leaving some things to the imagination are scarier than showing all the gore.
Not a lot of Hitchcock fans in today's directors, sadly... :(
I love suspense! I also think leaving some stuff to your imagination is more terrifying. Case in point, David Fincher's Seven. Creepiest thing I ever saw. Why? You only see the aftermath of the crimes--way scarier than ever having to see the actual process of how the victim's got that way.
That movie stayed with me for months.

9. You want good suspense, check out The Machinist |
|
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0361862/Brad Anderson is definitely a director worth keeping an eye on, I think.

Yes--"Seven" is a good example. I want to sit on the couch clutching a pillow to hide behind when the suspense gets to intense. I don't want to "gag" while watching a movie because it is so disgusting. When watching "Seven", I "jumped" from surprise at several scenes also. I must be weird---I want to feel fear when watching a horror movie---I don't want to go be turned off.

7. Worst Art Direction in a studio horror film ever |
|
The Art Director and Production Designer should be shot.
The number of "issues" I had with the design of that film could fill a couple of pages. My top two were the paint job on the room where they were captive. Would it hurt someone to use maybe more than the same 4 tints of paint in the whole room, really? It was a beaten down, broken horrific room, but yet it all seemed to match because no one bothered to really paint a good set. And the huge door...come on, that thing looked like it was painted by some undergrad in scene painting class. You could see the unrealistic paint layering and the rust effects were entirely laughable.
Also, no attempts to mask the theatrical lights used in scenes. Two moments stand out, the women in the chair with the mouth restraint clearly has a half-assed covered theatrical light shining on her and in the strange garage scene (strange in that it took place in what seemed to be a fucking barn) you could clearly see several fixtures.
I sure hope that for Saw II, the new Production Designer actually knows what they're doing and hires people who can paint a film set not to look like a film set.

8. Never saw it, but laughed at the trailer. |

After all the obligatory screams of "Help!" and "Get me out of here!", the narrator says, no joke, "See 'Saw.'"
