Dear George,

Your movies used to be kick-ass cool, not lame.

What happened to you, man?

It's pretty sad when a first-time director can make a remake of Dawn of the Dead that's ten times the fun of your latest installment of the "Dead" series. Maybe it's time you gave it up, and started doing "disease of the week" movies for ABC.

Yours,
CA

1. What didn't you like about it?
Sorry, but I'm a huge Romero fan, and absolutely adore the "Dead" saga.

2. have you seen this one?
I'm a fan, too, but this one...yeesh.

Transparent characters.

Wooden actors.

Script with absolutely no trademark cleverness/quipiness.

Silly zombies (cheerleader, bride, clown, Santa).

Poor zombie acting.

Dumb plot.

Implausable post-event "society".

Etc.

Etc.

Etc.

3. Okay, this one isn't "dawn", certainly not "night"...
and doesn't even stand up to "day", however I still think, despite its flaws, it was fun to watch. Silly zombies? C'mon. What about nun zombie (dawn), clown zombie 1 (from day), or hare Krishna zombie (dawn)? The tongue and cheek nature of the last one, I thought, was reminiscent of "Dawn", my personal fav. But, in some broader respects, after waiting this long for another "dead" movie, I did expect a little more from Romero, but I still had a good time watching this flick.

7. ok you answered my question
i've been really wanting to see this, as it was described by some as his "return to form"

meh

i guess his strengths with the series were the social metaphors respective to the period in which they were released (especially dawn & its parallels to consumerism)

i like the original dawn of the dead the best... the remake last year sucked goat nuts

6. I'm glad you agree.
I loved the remake!

Particularly the opening sequence, up to and including the opening titles with the Johnny Cash track.

Fuckin' great remake. I actually prefer it to the original; I like to think it's the kind of movie Romero would have made back in the day if he had had the budget and the technology.

Plus some of my friends were in it!

Have you read Maddox' review? Best. Review. Ever.

8. yeah, the remake was
great, and they didn't waste any time getting to the damn point (meaning the zombies)....all of it was awesome, i am surprised it was this good, cause the promotion for it, i never saw a single preview for it, i bought it on a fluke, a pay of mine on a chat room, told me about it so i got it...also Boondock Saints is another amazing movie, you should check it out.

10. I didn't really care for Boondock Saints that much...
It was okay, but not great.

There's a documentary kicking around about the director of 'Saints, and about how he's become a complete asshole since making a commercial picture. Now, that I want to see.

5. I love Night and Dawn
Haven't seen Land yet. My bro and I have made a tradition of seeing Romero zombie flicks with our pappy during Christmas, so we'll probably screen it in a few months. Is it really that bad?

9. It wouldn't have been if it wasn't Romero.
I mean, I could forgive this movie if it had been made by Alan Smithee, because there's lots of gore and full-auto gunfire, and even Tom Savini doing another cameo, but I expected more from George Romero.

There's no wit. There's no style.

There's a preposterous scene in which a hooker is thrown to two zombies in a wager (I'm making it sound far, far better than it is).

There's a problem with the two lead female characters looking EXACTLY the same. I think the rule of thumb is good=blonde, bad=brunette. Both these chicks have the same brunette hairdos, and you're supposed to tell them apart in the dark with zombies stomping all over their shit?! I'm sorry, but after the first five minutes of this movie I decided I wasn't going to expend any anergy trying to differentiate the subtleties of characters who are essentally the same, and completely expendable.

This is the "Beyond Thunderdome" of the "Dead" franchise.

The one (relative) upside is my friend Jonathan Whittaker has a supporting role in it, but Jon's kind of an ass, so that doesn't justify the movie, in my opinion.

14. Gotcha
We won't expect the Romero style, but we'll expect a moderately entertaining gorefest at least.

15. Oh, yeah.
Particularly the practical FX, as opposed to the VFX (the remake of "Dawn" had far better VFX).

There's a couple of great flesh ripping/intestine eating shots. Good stuff.

13. I'm a big fan too
And was a little disappointed with the story but the gore made up for it. Dawn of the Dead is one of my all time favorites. I have a framed poster hanging in my hallway signed by the 4 main actors and Savini, whom I all met last month.

The director & the writer/star of Shaun of the Dead were in the movie as the zombies chained up at the carnival. I like how Dennis Hopper stated that he based his character off of Rumsfeld.
