1. Duran Duran might not be described by many as a " rock " band ...
Edited on Wed Oct-26-05 03:51 AM by CarolinaPeridot
but I would go far into calling them " lame " .

Of course I am biased and all considering I am a Duranie ;) :P

162. Agreed.
A new wave band with a very good set of musicians. I will not pick on Duran Duran any more. I was brutal to them in the 80's (because I was an Iron Maiden fan, and picking on pop music is what metalheads do).

163. Carlos Cavazo
He was a pretty good guitarist. The one good thing about Quiet Riot is the fact that they broke all the other metal bands out in the 80's. Their persistence led to the LA Heavy Metal movement which was still underground at the time.

206. Two Quiet Riot hits weren't even theirs
"Cum On Feel the Noize" and "Mama Weer All Crazee Now" were originally done by Slade, who were huge in Europe but never hit it in the U.S.

Funny you mentioned Dokken, I haven't seen that name in over 20 years and I probably would've lived the rest of my life without seeing it again had it not been for this thread.

I voted the rock band other but I also wish to vote for ELO.

Foghat's tune was good enough for Jim Carrey's entrance song on the MTV Music Awards a few years ago.

Foghat even got a line in the movie Kingpin- "Your act is about as fresh as a Foghat concert."

Now, what about Blue Oyster Cult?

ELP is on that list, so I make the case that T.S.P. should be there too! (T.S.P. is pop-rock, ELP, (I happen to like them) is prog-rock). Then there was "Culture Club"... Yes we did really want to hurt him!!!

Edited on Wed Oct-26-05 02:42 PM by last_texas_dem
Even though I'm pretty sure that's all they will ever be known for... They released some decent stuff in the late-sixties/early-seventies. It's dated (but most stuff from that period is) but catchy "heavy" acid rock, and they released several other singles that should've been hits but weren't.

166. An excellent choice
During the height of their stardom, Tim Gaines was busted for cocaine, I think. It let the fans of that band know that Jesus was only a pretense to carve their own niche for lackluster music.

Actually, I think the same thing about most Christian music....uninspired drivel.

Now Gospel...THAT has soul.

Well, everyone has his or her own tastes, but I was talking about the whole album, to say nothing of the records they made previously in Australia. A lot of that album is suggestive, but that doesn't bother me. What was kind of funny is at the concert I saw, Christina Amphlette had put on some weight, but was still stuffed into this reinforced, slinky costume. It was pretty apparent.

145. Journey's first eponymous album ROCKS
it went downhill after Steve Perry, though. Turned from Santana-esque jamming into radio pop. That first album is killer though, Neal Schon was showing his heavy Santana influence and Gregg Rolie made the Hammond roar. There are some great instrumental moments on that record...

Fred Durst not only gave birth to the shitty "nu-metal" genre (which in turn gave birth to such hellspawn as Linkin Park, Nickelback and Staind), but he single-handedly redefined what a corporate tool is.

Post-grunge and nu-metal were the reasons that this long-time metal musician got out of music altogether. I'm getting back in, now because of some of the good metal coming from Scandanavia.

Fred Durst pisses me off, and I am ashamed of Primus for giving him a spot on their Anti-pop album.

Springsteen, ELO, Chicago and Emerson, Lake and Palmer

Though I like Springsteen, his music isn't always my cup of tea. But I don't think he's lame! ELO and Chicago may not be one's style of music but I think they are pretty good. As far as Emerson Lake and Palmer, why would you consider them lame??

The Monkeys
Duran Duran

The Monkees were made for T.V. and were not really a band. But let's face it, it's teeny-bopper music. Oh, Duran Duran is a "fun band". But the musicians they have in there are very good! Especially Andy Taylor.

75. The Grateful Dead.
The fact that a large part of their reputation is based on self-indulgent musical wanking (those godawful "jam sessions") that's unlistenable without the aid of psychotropics makes them an easy choice. They also win lameness points for helping keep the hippie/faux-Sixties subculture alive long after it should've been buried.

I happen to like their "jams" and their songwriting, but it's totally a matter of taste.

What *I* hate about them is this: none of them could fucking sing. And they tried playing blues (worse than most high school bands do), R&B, Chuck Berry, etc, without possessing a smidgen of the raunch or soul necessary to pull that off. Plus, with two drummers, their rythyms were leaden and, timbrally, uncomfortable to listen to. (With just Kreutzmann banging the skins, they were quite agile, however)

If they had stuck with the psychedelic/prog/free jazz side of their character, they'd be a lot more respected by many music fans, I'd wager.

94. I kinda liked American Beauty & Workingman's Dead
Even crummy singers can produce fine sounds if they learn to sing harmony. And their first LP was jolly in an old-tyme jug-band folk-rock sort of way.

I saw them play the Catacombs in the early days--back when Owsley Stanley (or was it Stanley Owsley) was traveling with them. A friend had met Pigpen at the Free Clinic in SF the previous year, so we dropped by the motel for a visit beforehand. Young & innocent as we were, we didn't take advantage--& nobody took advantage of us. Hey, we got to see the show free! Here's another Catacombs show I saw. Glad somebody was keeping track:

Later on, I "experienced" at least one Dead show in the proper way. I didn't become a Deadhead but can see the attraction--beyond mere music.

92. I voted for Winger
I like most of the other bands (of course, I never claimed I didn't have "lame" music taste). But really, most of these are just the usual suspects that everyone dumps on. I know they're not "cool" to like, but most put out their share of decent material. Consider the Monkees; for a "prefab" band they still put out some good sixties-pop music, especially once they established creative control with their third album. And Bruce Springsteen; I'm no fanatic or even a major fan but it's really hard to consider him as one of the all-time lamest performers.

I cannot agree with this. Every musician I know becomes influenced by Rush aat some point in time. The vocals are not for this time, but back in the 70's and 80's, Rush single-handedly made more good rock musicians in the garages of America than all of the hair metal bands combined.

No denying that both bands are horrible, but in the end I guess I have to applaud Air Supply for the integrity of at least admitting that they were a lame assed easy listening ballad band, and not trying to fake it with "rock" songs like Survivor did. "The Search Is Over" was 10 times sappier than any Air Supply record.

154. I have an unhealthy, and uncanny love for REO
I just about got orgasmic, when I got to see REO, Journey and Styx jam on "Roll the Changes," on VH-1 Classic. I cannot explain it. Otherwise I like Zappa, Stravinsky, postmodern and post-avant art, experimental cinema -- but, somehow, the REO thing works for me.

144. Huey Lewis and the News...
...my freshman year roommate in college was a guy who loved that band. They were his favorite. Anytime they came on he'd bellow "HUUUUEYYYYYYYYYYYYY" in celebration. Incidentally, this guy used to wear skinny ties with piano keys stenciled on them and think it was the ultimate in "cool."

He also liked some of the other bands already mentioned here, like REO Speedwagon and Styx. He also liked a band called Quarterflash and was really into Brian Adams, too.

What a roommate!

153. Blink 182 -- and the entire punk & faux punk catalogs, really
Except for a Swedish band called "Refused," who, in two albums, rendered the rest of the punk catolog meaningless, even though, to me, they don't really sound that punk-ish.

Anyway, I REALLY hate Blink 182. When I hear their music, I want to vomit, and when I see their faces, I want to punch them.

I really, really think that the list of bad rock bands cannot be done on DU since the "hair metal" craze that soaked up the heavy metal movement of the 1980's.

Winger is only one example (strangely enough, most of the musicians of Winger were very good, but the music was formulaic and vacuous).

But the dippiest rock band that I have seen RECENTLY is The Darkness.
