George Clooney Has Considered Suicide
<snip>

George Clooney claims he considered killing himself because of pain caused by a fall on the set of ''Syriana," a political thriller costarring Matt Damon and Chris Cooper. ''I was taped to a chair and getting beaten up, and we did quite a few takes," Clooney told NPR. ''The chair was kicked over and I hit my head. I tore my dura, which is the wrap around my spine which holds in spinal fluid." The actor ruled out painkillers because there's a history of addiction in his family, but the pain got so great, he considered suicide. '' go, 'Well, you'll have to kill yourself at some point, you can't live like this,' " said Clooney, who's since had several operations to correct the problem.

1. He claimed it was taken out of context.
Per an IMDB article from yesterday, I believe.

2. Sounds like you're right....
Since he was avoiding painkillers, I can imagine the pain might have made him want to die. Only for a minute. Then, as most of us might do, he asked the docs--"Aside from drugs, what the hell can you do about this?" The docs came up with some suggestions that seem to have worked out.

One family member who had "problems" may have been his aunt, the late Rosemary Clooney. I remember an interview where he discussed her career. After a very tough childhood, she became a top recording artist & film star. When the public started wanting rock & roll--her records stopped selling. Personal problems ensued. Her example is one reason George wants to do good work but does not care much about "fame."

I did a bit more research. Rosemary Clooney's troubles included not just prescription drug abuse & marital difficulties but possible bipolar disorder. She supported RFK, witnessed his murder & was hospitalized shortly thereafter. But she eventually made a comeback--singing jazz standards, touring & selling records to a smaller but most appreciative audience. She died in 2002.

Let's hear it for the Clooneys!

3. He says it's not so! It was supposedly taken out of context!!
George Clooney has denied reports that he contemplated suicide.

George said that reports he considered suicide after being hurt filming Syriana were taken "out of context".

According to BBC online he said: "I certainly did not talk about wanting to kill myself."

Clooney is currently promoting his second film as a director, Good Night, and Good Luck.
