Bruce and Bono too like to whale (I think that's the word) allot in their songs which is an acquired taste, but I find Sting has a nice voice. Fields Of Gold is one of my favorite songs.

when it got to the really high part ("the land of the freeeeee") she cracked so bad. It wasn't even a crack. She just couldn't get anywhere near the note. You would think she would know her range. I almost fell out of the chair when it happened. It was bad. I saw it on like a VH1 show when they were showing screw ups.

33. Ringo Starr was a borderline singer with the Beatles
But I kind of liked his twangy nasalized tones.

Eric Burdon of the Animals had a problem with range but I guess it was his style to start screeching on the high notes. I can't imagine House Of The Rising Sun being sung by anyone else.

Jimi Hendrix was also a non-singer who growled and halfway talked through a lot of his tunes (he was obsessed with Bob Dylan) and made it sound fantastic, turning it into his own special sound.

I think the above three were poor singers who actually developed a style around their limited voices and made them their trademarks. Such cannot be said about others like Britney Spears who actually try to sing as though they had a good voice.

56. There once was a guy
called Wes Montgomery, who played guitar using only his thumb. He developed this style of playing because his neighbours used to complain about the noise when he was practicing, and plucking with this thumb instead of a plectrum made less noise.

He became a real virtuoso, and could play his guitar with his thumb faster than most people could using a plectrum, which is quite remarkable when you think that using a plectrum you can pluck upwards and downwards, but with his thumb he could only pluck downwards.

He became a great jazz guitarist, but sadly he died tragically young. If you want to know more, you can ask progmom about him. She will probably be very happy about that. :)

I read a couple of interesting things about Mark Knopfler's guitar playing. First of all, he is left handed but plays the guitar right handed. Second, one of his biggest influences was Richard Thompson.

60. One of the more quirky songs off the "Brothers in Arms" album was
The Man's Too Strong which quickly became my favorite off the album.

Boy howdy does this sound familiar.

The Man's Too Strong

I'm just an aging drummer boy
And in the wars I used to play
And I've called the tune
To many a torching session
Now they say I am a war criminal
And I'm fading away
Father please hear my confession

I have legalised robbery
Called it belief
I have run with the money
I have hid like a thief
I have re-written history
With my armies of my crooks
Invented memories
I did burn all the books
And I can still hear his laughter
And I can still hear his song
The man's too big
The man's too strong

Well I have tried to be meek
And I have tried to be mild
But I spat like a woman
And I sulked like a child
I have lived behind walls
That have made me alone
Striven for peace
Which I never have known
And I can still hear his laughter
And I can still hear his song
The man's too big
The man's too strong

Well the sun rose on the courtyard
And they all did hear him say
You always was a Judas
But I got you anyway
You may have got your silver
But I swear upon my life
Your sister gave me diamonds
And I gave them to your wife '
Oh Father please help me
For I have done wrong
The man's too big
The man's too strong

I do like a few Britney songs, though. One that comes to mind who just can't sing is Hilary Duff. Also Michael Bolton and Kathy Lee Gifford. Belters like Scott Stapp. Rap/rockers like Fred Durst. Indie vocals like the ones from Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. Jessica Simpson. Yoko Ono. Lauryn Hill. There are more..

I love Madonna.

I have friends who swear to me, from working with them in a recording studio, that McBride and Hill can't sing in tune to save their souls.

And I'm not sure who was singing on what TV show last night, but she had that generic grunt quality to her voice that sounded like she was singing in the middle of taking a dump. Sorry, but that's just how it sounds. I think someone told her it's supposed to be sexy.

106. One of my friends did a recording session in Nashville with Martina,
and said she was appalled. The tech guys let her poor pitch go, because they use a machine to bend it to the proper frequency.

I've enjoyed some of her recordings...and Faith Hill's as well...but I'm afraid much of what I've really been enjoying is the tech mastery, not the singers. :-(

Then again, we really don't know what the other two members of Rush would sound like if they opened their mouths.

Good music and songwriting--it's a shame that Lee's horrible voice makes it inaccessible to so many. There would probably be some popular Rush covers by now if their music wasn't so hard to play!

138. Way over yonder in the minor key...
Great track off of Mermaid Avernue (Billy Bragg and Wilco, lyrics by Woody Guthrie):

From: http://www.guntheranderson.com/v/data/wayovery.htm
-
I lived in a place called Okfuskee
And I had a little girl in a holler tree
I said, little girl, it's plain to see
Ain't nobody that can sing like me
Ain't nobody that can sing like me

/ G - - C - - - / - - - G - - - / 1st / C - - G / D - - Em - - - /

She said it's hard for me to see
How one little boy got so ugly
Yes, my little girly, that might be
But there ain't nobody that can sing like me
Ain't nobody that can sing like me

{Refrain}
Way over yonder in the minor key
Way over yonder in the minor key
There ain't nobody that can sing like me

/ C - - G - - - / D - - Em - - - / D - - Em - - - /

We walked down by the Buckeye Creek
To see the frog eat the goggle eye bee
To hear that west wind whistle to the east
There ain't nobody that can sing like me
Ain't nobody that can sing like me

Oh my little girly will you let me see
Where over yonder where the wind blows free
Nobody can see in our holler tree
And there ain't nobody that can sing like me
Ain't nobody that can sing like me

{Refrain}

Her mama cut a switch from a cherry tree
And laid it on to she and me
It stung lots worse than a hive of bees
But there ain't nobody that can sing like me
Ain't nobody that can sing like me

Now I have walked a long, long ways
And I still look back to my tanglewood days
I've led lots of girls since then to stray
Saying, ain't nobody that can sing like me
Ain't nobody that can sing like me

{Refrain}

making stuff that was too large....

Singing isn't about sounding like Whitney or Maria all the time... it's like Bruce Springsteen's singing is more of a poetry and verse. I think he has a wonderful voice that's well honed and at the top of his craft.

Madonna actually has a very accomplished voice. Her ability to sustain with strength in the lower registers has developed very nicely from her early days. She has a lovely, strong voice that is very well trained and nice to the ear.

Okay, britney, ashlee and jessica really CAN'T sing.. they chirp and squeek and make gutteral utterings. Jessica's slaughter of "Take My Breath Away" moved me to tears, of grief.

I like the current male singers. The fellas from the Counting Crows have a great, unique sound with again, a nice range that works well with the music they create.

A singer's test is live... anyone can sound okay after being computer generated, but for a singer to pick up a microphone and slap out a tune takes a real talent and a good voice.

I was APPALLED to hear Liz Phair sound like SHIT a couple weeks ago on a live talk show... She had NO range, no timber, was totally off key and was completely weak and trivial. Her outfit was great though.

Okay the guy from Creed can't sing so good either. He's too nasal.

But singing is.... art. We can't all be of the same calliber or else we'd all be the same. I can't imagine saying that Joe Cocker can't sing because he's so unique.

152. Thanks for the perspective, radwriter
As one of the posters said above, it's not about the singers you don't like, it's about the ones who can't sing, the ones who have faulty pitch and lack of breath control, like one woman I once tried singing with whose pitch always sagged at the end of the line, or the ones who are singing out of their proper range.

I don't pay so much attention to pop music anymore, but I did notice a few years ago that Edie Brickell would be lost without a microphone.

So, according to one of my knowledgeable friends, would Andrea Bocelli. (Sorry, Bocelli fans!)

I once saw Charlotte Church (teen-age soprano) on TV, and I noticed that she was straining on the high notes. I hope she's using some of her earnings to hire a vocal coach, because her voice won't last till she's 21 otherwise.

A perfect example of a non-"pretty" voice that was extremely effective was Janis Joplin. She died at 27, and her voice probably wouldn't have lasted past 28, but boy, did she have an emotional range in her singing and an instinct for when to growl and when not to.

157. I love his music, but Tom Petty's voice really isn't that good.
But somehow, he pulls it off.

160. She has a beautiful voice.
Her latest wackiness has taken away from it I am afraid, but in her prime, she was wonderful. And when she sang the national anthem, it blew me away.

:)
