Hanging Body Mistaken for Halloween Decoration
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/news/archive/2005/10/27/national/a105537D66.DTL

The apparent suicide of a woman found hanging from a tree went unreported for hours because passers-by thought the body was a Halloween decoration, authorities said.

The 42-year-old woman used rope to hang herself across the street from some homes on a moderately busy road late Tuesday or early Wednesday, state police said.

The body, suspended about 15 feet above the ground, could be easily seen from passing vehicles.

3. Actually, It Was the Mummified Body of a Train Robber
It was an Oklahoma train robber, Elmer McCurdy, who had been killed in a shoot-out with police. The funeral home enbalmed him with arsenic, which was common practice at the time. When nobody came to claim his body (and pay for the enbalming), they used his corpse as an advertisement for the excellence of their services. Over the years, the mummified body was sold and resold so many times people forgot it was a preserved human corpse, and it ended up fun house, where a prop guy working on an episode of the Six Million Dollar Man pulled on one of the arms and discovered it wasn't a plaster dummy after all.
