Is anyone else doing the National Novel Writing Month 50K words challenge?
Edited on Thu Oct-27-05 05:24 PM by tjdee
For those that don't know, every year for...um, some years, every November there's a group of people that get together and write a book of at least 50,000 words in thirty days (that's about 176 pages I think).

I first learned about it last December. :silly: I signed up, got an idea, and now am spinning me wheels cause you're not supposed to start till Nov. 1.

Here's the site, they've got forums and stuff:

Anyone else doing it?

2. Thanks...I have a few not finished books, and I really need the pressure.
I'd love to actually *finish* a book I start, LOL.

What's your book about?

7. Shhhh....
*whispering* it's a non-DU approved genre. ;) It's a romantic suspence. It needs some work, but at this point all I care about is it's freaking done lol! What finally got me to finish it was a first draft in 14 days challenge on a board I frequent. It had been wallowing at 3/4 done for about a month when that challenge started. Pressure's a good thing lol. I have the next one plotted out, but I'm going to wait another week or two before I actually start it. It's a post-civilization fantasy kind of thing.

8. DU doesn't like romantic suspense?
:scared:

I love romantic suspense. It's like the perfect genre for me, LOL. I think every movie/book should be romantic suspense. So there.

A first draft in 14 days? Whoa! How long is it?

10. Every now and then
there's a romance is crap reply in a post around here. I think the important thing to remember is that the romance market is huge. Some's crap, some's good. Like every other genre out there.

Yeah I thought 14 days was a bit extreme lol, but amazingly ppl did it. My draft is 200 pages now, but once I get the additions I want in it I think it'll be about 350.

13. Not sure...
but I think you can just add 50K to that opening line--you're not supposed to count anything that you've already written.

But there are a lot of people who are setting out their stories, outlining, etc. I think there's even a thread called "What's your first line", so

14. Sounds intriguing. What if you can't finish the book in a month?

15. Reminds me of a book I was given by an English friend:
"The Book of Mini Sagas". It was from a contest The Telegraph Sunday Magazine ran.

The rules: The story must be fifty words long, neither more nor less, thye title must be no more than fifteen and a story should be conveyed, not simply a mood or anecdote.

The Telegraph started this contest in 1982. The book I have was published in 1985. It's quite entertaining, and the entrants were of all ages (was just looking at a story by a 6 year old).

So good luck to you tjdee!
