Has anyone else ever read the Uni-Bombers manifesto?

But it took him 35,000 words to make that point.

I have also read the Communist Manifesto. You know, most of the people I know in real life have never read it. The document by itself isn't that incendiary. Oddly enough.

The Unibomber was one weird one though. It seems to me that he imposed that way he was living (no electricity, no running water, no technology) on himself and then took it out on other people who did have those things.

... he was an extreme genius who turned on higher education after being fired from his job as a professor. He's an odd duck though.

I agree with you about the Communist Manifesto as well. There is nothing really that controversial in there unless you have absolutely ignorant about Marxism. The only real way to get anything incendiary out of it is to take certain lines out of context. You can do that with any book from Harry Potter to the Bible though.

6. I've read The Communist Manifesto a few times...

And wrote a half-assed (B) paper about Marx's critique of political economy and capitalism. The man made some good points.

As for the Unabomber's manifesto, I attempted to read it but didn't care enough to finish it.

But it wasn't technology, per se, that he was railing against. It was the *use* of technology to create a uniform, technocratic, collective, society, were everyone was part of the "machine", and lacked fundamental freedoms of self. His solution was smash the way we think about all kinds of technology, and make its use optional, rather than compulsory.

I thought it was quite a cohesive piece, not too bad as manifestos go.... but still, sadly, a genius mind trapped in a fugue state.

but nothning else. I read excerpts of Iceberg Slim's stuff, my brother digs him and has a couple of his books around.

I've read The Brother's Karamazov, it's still one of my favorite books.

But horribly flawed in the end.

There has always been a voice within society that wants to resist change and progress. They see it as a desrtuctive force. And in a way it is. But life consumes life to live. And progress destroys old ways to make way for better one's.

The trouble is we cannot know whether the new ways will work better or not. That is the crisis. The old ways may be flawed but we know them and have adapted to them. They work in comfortable ways.... for some. And that is the problem. What may be satisfactory for some may be oppressive to others. Thus we keep descontructing our current way and try to fathom a new one.

It can cause some to become reactionary to progress. They reject it and isolate themself. They begin to view the constant march forward as a illness in itself. A compulsion. In truth they are projecting. They are the one's that have developed a compulsion. They can no longer handle life which is about change and embrace death.

I also read a lengthy piece he wrote for a Green/Anarchist magazine about 3 years ago which basically just recycled the same ideas.

They aren't new of course. I enjoyed it and agreed with a lot of it.
