Poll question: Is your state red or blue?
We really know that they are some shade in between but according to the polls what color is your state

49. Hi, PittPoliSci. In Pittsburgh, it's mostly the suburbs though that...
have the W stickers, from what I saw. During the 2004 election, It always felt so wonderful going into Pittsburgh proper because it seemed that most people supported Kerry. I found myself "having" to go into Pittsburgh more and more often just so I could have my morale boosted.

56. Yeah, I felt the same way.
The further east you go, the more crazy it becomes. When you get out towards Greensburg, it's downright shameful how much money the Republicans spent on campaigns. Plus the Trib, ugh, I get sick just thinking about the Trib...

61. I don't live in the east, and it's really, really bad where I live too.
I walked in my neighborhood every morning during the summer, and I'd just cringe when I saw one of the Trib's red plastic wrapped papers in a neighbor's driveway. Red is VERY appropriate!

I worked with MoveOn during the elections, and we were going from lists of registered Democrats. It was amazing how many of them said that they were going to vote for B*.

All these indictments for serious corruption and there are no morality preachers saying a word, yet back when Clinton got caught cheating on his wife, they wouldn't quit asking, "What will we tell the children?" Why aren't they asking that now?

But Oregon & Washington are pretty much the same, geographically & politically speaking. Your Democratic votes are close to the water and along the I-5 corridor. The further you get away from either is also the further you get from reality (and start voting for the Chimp and believing idiots like Tim Eyman or the Oregon Citizens Alliance (are those goddamned idiots still around?)

13. well, unlike, say, California or Minnesota,
we have a Democratic governor. I think 'swing state' should also be an option along with solid blue, or solid red. The 45-55 spread either way would be swing. Otherwise, how do you call Iowa which was blue when I lived there and wrote LTTEs and worked for Gore, but turned red after I left? What about SD, which always votes for Repub presidents but often has Democratic Senators and statewide Representatives?
I think we need a scoring system, one point per representative, two per senator, two for governor, and two for every five points over fifty in the last Presidential election. Thus SD has 3 blue points, and 8 red points. Iowa has 5 blue points and 6 red points. Hmm, there probably should be one point for the state house and two for the state senate as well.

Iowa is a good example of what a truly deep purple state looks like.

24. Thanks, Robeson! It's always great to see you, as well! :D
But it's true, as lovely as my northern NY community is, the majority seem to be Freepers.:-( I was totally depressed, before the election, at the proliferation of Bush*-Cheney lawn signs and bumper stickers, and even a few hold-outs who still have Lazio (Hillary Clinton's opponent) stickers on their pick-ups. Most local elections are decided in the Republican primaries because no Democrat can win here. *sigh* I was even accosted, on election day, in the parking lot of my local PetsMart, by a Freeper who objected to my bumper stickers... But I know enough, now, thanks in a large part to DU, to take anybody on, and I have, LOL!:D But my friends are kindred spirits, and one of them just joined DU! And another one just called me, today, livid that anyone is still supporting Bush*! So we're fighting the good fight, even here in the North Country.:7

22. I live in a God forsaken red state and
I don't know where I would go if I DID happen to win the lottery. Any blue state would be a major upgrade just because the ratio of progressives to right wing nut jobs would be tilted in my favor. There seems to be a majority of compassionate progressive people in blue states, and I mean REAL progressives. Even the majority of the dems in NC are still conservative and they don't even seem to know it.

Edited on Fri Oct-28-05 04:05 AM by Awsi Dooger
The state's turn toward blue is mostly a myth. I guess you have to live here to understand that. The rural conservative vote, including the miners, is much more enthused and dependable than Clark County Democrats, especially in midterm years. Plus 9/11 spiked a terrorism fear that turned southern Nevada more national security minded, worried that the big hotels were logical future targets. Plenty of high income transplanted westerners are making up for the influx of Hispanics.

I'm just hoping we can turn some of the major statewide races next year, especially governor. Oscar Goodman is unlikely to run. He would likely defeat the GOP nominee Jim Gibbons. Otherwise, our best hope is Henderson mayor Jim Gibson, who is a more conservative Democrat than ideal but probably a better general election candidate than current Democratic frontrunner Dina Titus.

I was born and raised in Alaska. I love elements of it, but it really began to make me feel repressed the older I got. So I finally packed my bags to go live with my sister in Chicago. It really makes a big difference. I feel more at home in Chicago than I ever did in the town I was born and raised.

57. Indiana -red-although we do have one dem senator(Bahy) and at this point
most are wishing we had back our democratic governor because Mitch Daniels stinks.Instead of my man Mitch(his bumpersticker slogan) I am hearing more of let;s ditch Mitch.

I don't know why we are a red state because this is a state based on blue collar jobs, I suspect it has more to do with the fact that Elwood,Indiana was the first home for the Ku Klux Klan and the fact that fundamentalism runs strong through here, we are in the Bible Belt.

What I can't figure out is when people equated religion to Repugs..they are incompatable..it seems as if the snake oil salesmen have done their work in this state.

A blue collar voting for a repug is sheer stupidity but I fear that racism,no matter how hard (civilized)hoosiers try to hide it,is still deeply inbeddd in many in this state.

I have or should say had a friend whose 13 year old daughter rode on a wagon to the pumpkin patch. Her daughter said something like let's play slaves if we can find some chains.

Her mom thought that was hilarious and repeated it over and over to anyone who would listen. I said that is stupid and disgusting and I haven't heard from her since.

Oh well....

I think if you, I, Rev Cheesehead and a couple other DUer's moved out, it would tip to red!

63. Minnesota-- only state to go bluer in 2004 than 2000
Although we currently have a Repub governor and Repub majority in the state house (by only two seats). Also, 1/2 of our congressional and senate delegations are also Repubs.

All that will change in 2006, though-- the way the Repubs have been screwing up the state, we're only going to go bluer.
