So, New Yorkers, tell me about the NYPD
I just filled out the online application to take the police officer test. They give a bunch of advantages to veterans, including a five point bonus on the test, and they'll credit me with three years tenure since I was in for six years. I can retire after 17 years at full pension, and that would place me at 42. :)

2. a couple specific questions I'd like to know
are

What's the reputation of the NYPD among city residents?
Is anywhere livable on $30K for a couple years?

3. Some people think they keep us safe.
I personally think they don't really give a fuck and intrude on our privacy and freedoms. You know that whole subway bag check thing....and they really like to spend their time on the wost nitpickey offenses, like giving tickets to subway riders who sit on the staircase. oh-the-humanity! Most of the people in my circle dislike them greatly as well. sorry...but pigs and police states blow.

And yes, you can live on about 30K in NYC...you just need to live in Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx, or Upper Manhattan.

So I guess my being an ACLU member for the past seven years kind of clashes with being a NYPD officer :P

:P

seriously though, there is only one dept of the NYPD i respect and its the ASPCA Cops who bring animal abusers to justice. If you worked in that department, you'd be OK in my book. Otherwise :grr:

They illegally film and take pictures at protests! and beat people up willy nilly! I saw the horse unit trample an old man on the 2/15/03 protest agains the Iraqi war. He was just trying to get out of the way and a group of them went after him while on horseback. :grr::grr:

6. Read a book called Blue Blood
Very good portrait of the history and current state of the NYPD, from an incredibly articulate cop.

7. 30K is really tight around here
You could probably swing it in Jersey or something though. (I don't think they require you to live in the city, do they?)

I've never had any big problems with the NYPD. In fact, I generally like seeing their presence most of the time. Which is odd -- in high school and college (before I moved out here), I had a great fear and mistrust of the police. Now, I feel much safer when they're around.

18. i had a friend who's a cop
she hated it, but largely from the pettyness and power trips. I figure that's probably the same anywhere though. You can live in NY on 30k, and i think cops can ride the subway for free!

20. All I know is that the song "New York City Cops" by The Strokes kicks ass
Though it's not exactly the most flattering song, haha.

21. Way back when, I read a book about the NYC training program
"The Making of a Cop." The writer follows a class of recruits all the way through the academy. Although it's from '88, it's still worth a read for any prospective recruit.

22. I have an uncle who was NYPD in the 70s
Once he had to answer a call where steam pipes had burst instantly cooking several people alive. It was a horror that haunted him for a long time.

He had to work the night shift, which meant he slept all day and missed the children's childhoods.

The pay sucks but the benefits are out of this world.

He now lives on Key West, his NYPD days a distant memory except for the money they keep sending.

I know you can get an illegal one bedroom apartment in Queens or Nassau, utilities included, for around $850 or $900 per month.

23. My wife, who is loathsome
to move to New York citing high crime rates...couldn't be any more wrong

http://www.blitzburghbucco.com/Book1.htm

It's not very scientific, but it does point out how much more crime ridden Pittsburgh (where we live now and where she wants to stay) is than New York City.
